Bronson Arroyo RHP

Is Heisey the new leadoff hitter? Is this Renteria's last chance to prove he deserves to stay on the team?

Ron Madden

If Renteria has to start I'd rather it be on a day Arroyo starts. Edgar is a terrible SS nowdays and Bronson doesn't throw a ton of groundballs.

Until a trade is made or Cozart comes up, I'd just keep Janish in the lineup. He is starting to hit a little better. I don't think he needs to be rested for ER.

The warning track at Camden Yards is made of rubber, according to Marty. This must be Renteria's dream, since he only has warning track power. Maybe he can bounce one out of here tonight.

That seems a bit generous. Maybe some conveniently placed trampolines just beyond the infield would do it.

Reds up in the fourth. Stubbs the batter. Let's see if he goes to right field again to avoid the strikeout.

Stubbs ahead in the count. Stubbs pops to short with a broken bat.

Heisey the batter, man on first, fourth inning, Reds by one. Two out.

Heisey seems more of a natural leadoff hitter than Stubbs. IMO.

Heisey called out on a borderline pitch.

Now that the Reds hitting is coming back, the starting pitching is falling apart.

Tie game at 4 a piece. Reynolds the batter.

Reynolds goes full. Long at bat. Reynolds walks.

Mark Reynolds steals second. Andino the batter.

Blitz Dorsey
06-25-2011, 08:24 PM
Bottom line: The Reds are just an incomplete/mediocre team this season. Overall the hitting is good, but it's very inconsistent. The starting pitching has been awful for the most part, although at least there is hope with Cueto and Leake at the top. Bullpen is good. LF and SS have been offensive holes this year for the most part. Just not a good club. Not a bad one, but not a good one. Just an average MLB team. This is pretty much what we should expect unless Jocketty makes some moves to improve the roster.

Kc61
06-25-2011, 08:25 PM
Is it me, or do the umpires give the Reds pitchers a smaller strike zone? Must be me.

Arroyo to Andino. Falls behind 2-1. Arroyo with 66 pitches.

Andino with a swinging bunt single, first and third.

BTW, Reds and Kansas City with worst interleague records this year. In MLB baseball.

Agree those are the moves, but I wonder if they would do something else. The pen is suddenly a scary place unless its late. Bray is a LOOGY these days, Arredondo and Fisher basically shouldn't pitch in close games. Who knows about Chapman? The others are overworked.

Interesting thinking, and it could be done. The Reds would have to call up Willis (or make a trade) to take Volquez's next turn in the rotation, though. Wood would not yet be eligible to be recalled from Louisville.

Must say that Bronson Arroyo is one of the best pitchers I've seen with men on base.

He usually comes up big. His defense really helped on the DP. Phillips is sometimes unbelievable at second.

Arredondo warming up. Why.

Willis deserves a turn. He's pitched solidly for the Bats. If he's back on track, he could be a great pick up for the Reds. They have been very patient with him and it could pay dividends.

I even started a thread supporting Dontrelle.

If Willis is back on track, then he could be the solid pitcher that everyone wants to acquire, and the Reds wouldn't have to give up any minor-league talent to get him.

The Reds TV graphic just showed Wednesday's pitching probables as TBA for the Reds. This would normally be Volquez's start, so you may be on to something.

Arroyo now goes out for the sixth inning. Let's hope he still has something in the tank.

DLee the batter. This guy kills the Reds. Has been a good hitter over his career. All around hitter.

I wouldn't be opposed to that, either. By definition, that is the function of a long reliever/spot starter. Davey Johnson always spoke to the need of a "sixth starter" in the bullpen. LeCure is exactly what he had in mind.

Willis pitched 8 innings last night. I don't think he's bullpen help for tomorrow. His turn is the same day as Volquez, he'll be ready for the start.

Exactly. I detest the very idea of LOOGY's. A pitcher needs to be able to pitch to both lefties and righties. Of course, I understand that sometimes it is necessary to work the matchups in your favor, but if a player can't pitch to right-handed hitters then he really hamstrings the bullpen. However, I think Bray has good enough stuff that he can pitch to righties.

That is one way to save the pen. Arroyo probably continues until he gives up some runs now.
Yep. Too bad EV just cannot pitch enough to not go deep into the bullpen. Probably be the same all year. Not good.

And now Arroyo makes us go to the pen. Oh boy.

Loogys have their place, but Bray is capable of more IMO. Capable arms are hard to find. Wasting them on one batter stints seems nutty. I'd have kept Horst for that one batter stuff and freed Bray for more work.

Can you imagine Lou Piniella making one of his lefties in 1990 into a LOOGY? Insanity! But that's exactly what would have happened to one of them (probably Charlton) if today's managerial strategies were used.

This is no knock on Dusty, who I think does a good job. It's just how the 2011 edition of the book says it's done.

Stubbs with a long homer to center.

The Reds need to get this idea of Stubbs being a leadoff hitter out of their heads. He needs to hit in the #6 or 7 spots for now, and he will eventually develop into a #4 or 5 hitter. It reminds me how everyone tried to shoehorn Eric Davis into the leadoff spot in 1984 and '85. I even heard people say that Davis should concentrate on hitting the ball on the ground and using his speed. Finally Pete came to his senses and put Davis in the #4 spot behind Dave Parker in 1986. He wasn't a leadoff hitter--he was an incredibly fast power hitter. The same thing can be said for Stubbs.

Yes - but Stubbs was hitting leadoff for lack of an alternative. I don't think the Reds view him as a lead off hitter.

Now, if Heisey can do well hitting first, Stubbs will stay 6th or 7th, as you say, and eventually hopefully fifth.

Taking the high road here, as I often do not, I will simply say leading the league in run differential has a strong corrleation with winning the division over a 162 game season. That's all those who point to the Reds NL Central leading Run Diff have been saying. Its a good thing. Its not a guarantee of anything.

I understand that. I hope it is correct. I also know that the 1970 Reds had a Pygath record of 91-71 and they won 102 games. So Run D wise that team was not that great yet they managed to win big. If this team loses 4-3 or something like that again on Sunday...these big scoring games don't mean much except to pad the stats.

I agree they are stat-padding when you look at one game...but when you have enough of those games over time it is a symbol of a good ball club.

The DBacks won the division with a negative run diff a few years back. Its hardly a perfect judge of a ball club, just one that does have a correlation with sucess.

I just hope this is not like the 1986-88 Reds teams. Teams with some good vet presence and a lot of good young players who just spun their wheels....struggling to hit above .500 and then start winning when it does not really mean much. Now with a WC in the picture and this division being what it is....I am a lot more confident than I sound....and I agree with you that it bodes well that this team can have a run finally.

I thought they would 14-7 when the TOR series started......and end with MIL.
