Pitiful inning. I guess with this lineup, we can't expect much. Who invented the Sunday Special anyway? Seems you would like to win this one so you march out a lineup that is totally disfunctional. I just hope Homer has it because if not the Reds don't have a chance.

Because the Reds bet on Jonny freaking Gomes, Fred Lewis, Paul Janish, and Chris Heisey--all with little chance of making a difference throughout the season and so with no offense, a 4 run lead is insurmountable. After last year's thrills, the front office stayed put and dropped the ball so to speak.

Nope. The pitch to Reynolds got too much of the plate but it was down. He's had good velocity. He's throwing strikes. The inning started by a an out that wasn't caught and Vlad getting a hit on a ball he had no business swinging at let alone actually getting his bat on and Lee hit one out on a ball that was a foot inside and the inning just seems to have gotten away from the Reds.

It's a crazy game. But I'm encouraged by how Homer is throwing.

The Reds were just six games out about two weeks ago. There's absolutely no reason to think they can't find themselves six back in the blink of an eye again. Does anyone really think the Reds will win more than one game in Tampa? Instead of going out and improving the ballclub, the Reds' strategy this summer is to hope that the Brewers, Cards and now Pirates lose games.

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty has no immediate plans to make a change, however.

"Everybody has a spot on the club that may not be [getting] all the production they want," Jocketty said. "But we're still getting good defense from those guys. That is as critical as the offense for us, because of our pitching staff and the way we've built our club, defense is extremely important."

"We're willing to wait for a while," Jocketty said. "We still have faith in Janish. Right now, he's probably putting a lot of pressure on himself. He just needs to relax and play the type of game he's capable of playing."

Are these quotes from Walt Jocketty or Mike Brown? This is the kind of misguided rationalization that usually comes the Bengals front office, and it's unbelievably frustrating for fans.

Offense was ok this series. Pitching went flat.True. Kind of. Reds scored 9 runs in the two losses, with 3 runs coming via the walk. Not spectacular. They scored 10 on Saturday giving them 19 for the series--plenty of runs to win the series, but...

Starters only pitched 15.2 innings allowing 25 hits and 14 runs for an ERA of 8+. They walked 10. Hideous.

The relievers did well allowing 3 runs and 6 hits over 12.1 innings. Still, they walked 7 for an ERA of shortly over 2.

If we get good games from those three, which we didn't we should have left Ballymore with a sweep. Instead we're in fourth place by percentage points behind the Brewers, Cardinals, and Pirates. With Walt being satisfied with what we have, it will probably be a long season.

Volquez not going 5 + extra innings using up Lecure + Bailey being pulled fairly early = mop up man which is currently Arredondo.

If I had my druthers, and I certainly do not, I would move Volquez ASAP before he does any more damage. Heck, I'd DFA him even. Of course, I think the Reds are going to continue to pitch him and hope he gets lined out, but I can't see it. Wayne gambled that EV would someday be dominant. It's not likely now. It's the same story over and over.

Jocketty seems to be overrating his pitching staff, that's for sure.Yes. It makes you wonder what team he's been watching. He likes Janish for his defense (who doesn't, but hitting? It is not a one-dimentional game), he has no problem with left field, and he thinks we have dominant pitching. Keep thinking that way, Walt. I am getting as jaded as you can be sometimes. :D

Of course the offense hits better and NOWQ the pitching goes back south again...... then it will be the bullpen blowing some games....then the offense will blow again and not do anything while the pitching looks great.

Mediocrity..... Catch the fever.
