Jeremy Hellickson, RHP
7-6, 3.09 ERA

Hellickson took his seventh loss of the season Tuesday in Milwaukee, when he allowed two runs on three hits while walking four in six innings. He is 2-3 with a 2.52 ERA in five starts at Tropicana Field this season.

I hope the Reds pitchers bring their A games because with Hellickson, Price, and Shields going for the Rays, the offense may struggle.

Last couple of games he seems to be making better contact, at least for singles and doubles. I assume the long balls will follow. Didn't look to good in that last at bat though.

As for Leake imploding, it's usually in the sixth or seventh. He's looking good tonight, though.

According to the strict interpretation of the rule, he absolutely ran out of the baseline. He needed to stay within that box on the foul side of the line. He should have been out.

The rule is there just for that reason. Umps really blew it on that one.

No sir.

Here's the rule from 7.08 (a)(1) of the MLB rulebook:

Any runner is out when...

He runs more than three feet away from his baseline to avoid being tagged unless his action is to avoid interference with a fielder fielding a batted ball. A runner’s baseline is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base he is attempting to reach safely;

Sutcliffe somehow turned an obvious double in to a comment on good baserunning that somehow was characterized by making productive outs. The cadence and tone may make it sound like he's being insightful, but that was gibberish.

Oh look Fay was wrong.

Not even since he returned, though his whip is just over 1 since being recalled. 2.49 ERA.

Just an opinion, but I think we've just had a better chance to see him in relief this season.

Last year, when coming in from the pen, I thought LeCure looked great, was throwing reasonably hard with deceptive movement and great command.

Maybe last year the rotation stint tainted what it looks like he can do over 1-2 innings at a time?

That well could be. Overexposure, perhaps?

It doesn't seem his tendencies are radically different. His K's are up a slight bit. His fastball velocity is up slightly. But overall his swinging strike% isn't any different. So yeah, it might just be how he's being used.

It's really nothing against Cueto for me. Whenever he or Leake is on the mound, I feel strongly they'll keep the team in the game.

Yeah, Price against Cueto is a better matchup on paper for the Reds than Wednesday's Shields vs. Volquez affair. I'm not caring for that one since Shields has three consecutive complete games to his name and has given up two total runs in that time.

After reading this thread I now know why I never watch ESPN games. Sounded pretty brutal last night.
Good thing the Cubs showed up in Rays uniforms. They were pretty brutal themselves. Especially Longoria. He played like he celebrated his two HR's from the night before just a little too much.
Leake was very good. He seemed to keep the Rays off balance most of the night. Keep playing Gomes while you have that lightening in a bottle. It won't last long.
Better win tonight with Cueto on the mound. Tomorrow could be a long afternoon.

What a statement. The Pirates should be nowhere near us if we hadn't helped them.

That's a pretty unfair statement IMO. The Pirates didn't get "help" from us. They beat us. Plain and simple. They had VERY well pitched games against us...and while at the time people were moaning about the crappy pitchers going all Cy Young on us...they've since shown that they're simply having very good seasons on the mound. They're not a fluke. They're not contenders either really...just not the bottom-feeders we've grown accustomed to.
