That Rolen is getting older and needs to start taking a back seat to a younger option....not so much to get the younger guy at bats but to give Rolen the rest he needs to be worth while in August-September.......

I dont think Rolen is hurt, I think he is old and just needs more time for his body to heal.

Rolen's 1st half last year was as good or better than Votto's 1st half this year. With a .942 OPS and 17 HR's at the half-way point, Rolen was hitting like an elite player, along with GG defense at 3B. Now he is just a shadow of that player.

Phillips 1st half last year was better than Bruce's 1st half this year.

All in all, not a lot of surprises. If Phillips continues to slip his future in Cincy is iffy.

Good thing Phillips has been hot lately. What stands out to me is rolens dowturn. I didnt realize he had that many homers at this point last year. Should have put up the SS production from last year to this year. I'd like to see that

For me without question its Brandon Phillips. He is a good guy, the glove is still lethal and a month ago I was on board with making sure he gets resigned. After looking at his 2010/2011 number and going back further I am not sure. He is really trending the wrong direction.

If the decline was due to a change in his game where he is more of an on-base guy I could understand, but he's not. His walk rates are down the last 3 years (7.0%, 6.8%, 6.5%).


The least surprising for me is Scott Rolen. Prior to the season my biggest concern was the "real" Scott Rolen was the 2010 post All-Star version which would leave a gaping hole in the #4 spot in the order. Without that type bat behind Votto the offense becomes much more dependant on the lumpy production of Bruce and Stubbs. The result has been a very inconsistent offense.

I had forgotten what a great year Phillips was having at this point last season. I remembered that it was good, but those numbers are great.

It's strange that the Reds have actually scored more runs this year, even though nobody's numbers (outside of Stubbs) show dramatic improvement, and some guys are way down from last year.

Gomes, in spite of his struggles, has the third best OPS on the team, and is playing his best ever defense. He's a lot more valuable than he's seemed at times... though it may be heresy here on these boards, perhaps he should play a few games at cleanup while he's hot to take some pressure off of Bruce.

Sadly, I am just about to the point of agreement. Seems the sun is setting on Mr. Rolen. While his defense is still well above average, a .290 OBP is not going to cut the mustard

Votto's 2011 OPS is not accurate when using the formula OBP + SLG = OPS. Otherwise great job with the stats. :thumbup:

The most suprising stats IMO are Rolens numbers and Votto's lack of power although he is making up for it by getting on base.

Phillips numbers are not down from last year besides his SB. He will have far more RBIs this year too batting in mainly the 2 hole. I could care less if he hits 5 less HRs from a few years ago is he is still driving in runs at this pace maintaining his avg. and defense. You pick up his option next year regardless and then see what kind of contract your looking at in 2013.

A lot of clubs -- good ones included, like the NYY -- make that mistake. But I think the difference is, a smaller-market team like Cincinnati can't really afford it.
