Stubbs, Phillips, Cozart out. Renteria, Bruce, Rolen, Gomes in.

Heisey 8,
Renteria 6,
Votto 3,
Rolen 5,
Bruce 9,
Hernandez 2,
Gomes 7,
Cairo 4,
Cueto 1.

v.
Jeff Karstens, RHP
8-4, 2.34 ERA

Karstens' 83-pitch shutout against the Astros in his last outing marked the least amount of pitches thrown in a shutout since Aaron Cook threw 79 in a start for the Rockies in 2008.

Johnny Cueto, RHP
5-3, 2.01 ERA

Cueto has gone four outings without a victory, though all have been quality starts. The right-hander has logged at least seven innings in eight of his last nine trips to the hill and sports a 2.01 ERA.

It should be a pitcher's duel.

Hurdle will hand the ball to a guy he has been able to trust all season long. Jeff Karstens (8-4, 2.34 ERA) takes the mound coming off a shutout of his own in his last start, and having won five of his last six starts. The right-hander has tossed eight consecutive quality starts, allowing only eight earned runs over 57 1/3 innings.

Dusty Baker indicated Tuesday that he had planned to give Phillips a rest. Phillips is 0-for-15 since his walk-off homer against St. Louis last Friday.

Rolen returns after three consecutive days off. He was off Sunday per usual after a night game, then sat Monday and Tuesday as his left shoulder continues to bother him.

the Reds have had success against Karstens

At this point its useless to complain about the lineup. You could probably put anyone in any order and they still wouldn't hit. Dusty should use an old Billy Martin trick and just pull names out of a hat for the order. It might not work but it wouldn't hurt either.

Oh you can... Heisey has an OBP of .305....but is slugging at over .420. Renteria does not need to play hardly ever again.

Cozart
Cairo
Votto
Hernandez or Heisey
Bruce/Hernandez (IF Hesiey bats 4th)
Rolen
Gomes

That's right... Bruce..Rolen and Gomes go 6-7-8.

I can see them busting out in CHI but the pitching then going back to giving up 6-7 runs. I really do.

I agree with you about Cozart. Unless he is hurt or sick he should play everyday. You have got to know if he is the answer at SS or not.
I don't have a problem with Heisey batting first. According to Fay, Stubbs is banged up after fouling a pitch off his leg. I just as soon have him as anyone else at this point. Why not bat Cairo 2nd in this order? Certainly a better option than Renteria. But of course we all know its a rule that the SS bats 2nd.
Of course with this said, they will go out and score 20 runs today.

Another Dusty Baker screwup. Why, with Cairo at second and only one out, dont you pinch hit for Cueto and increase your chances at scoring a much-needed 4th run. It's 800 degrees and Cueto was running on fumes back in the sixth. The Reds of course dont pick up the run, then after one batter in the 7th Cueto is done anyway.

Awful.

Awful.

I think his reasoning was probably this.

Let's see if Cueto can get me through the seventh inning. He's had a good game, he's my best pitcher.

If a man gets on, however, I'll bring in Bray to pitch to lefties. (Of course, Diaz a righty pinch hit.)

First guy got on, lefties were coming up, so he went to Bray.

With any other pitcher on the staff, it's a blunder. In this case, Dusty was trying to stretch Cueto in a big game, I'm ok with it.

Maybe. He has that combo of missing bats and getting ground balls.

But I'd like to see them try Masset in the ninth. Logan as the primary righty in the 8th. Somebody new in the seventh. Maybe Boxberger.

I don't have any stats to back it up but it seems like Masset allows a lot of inherited runners to score. He seems much better if he starts an inning. Ondrusek just seems a bit better with inherited runners. He just seems calmer too when he comes into a game. I would give him first shot at closer next season then just see what happens from that point.
