Hmmm, no Alonso? Please Dusty, please say you just aren't going to use him as a pinch hitter!

Especially odd since the Mets are throwing a righty. I suspect Heisey is now Dusty's guy in left; at least that is an upgrade over the previous "guy." But if Alonso isn't going to see regular ABs I'd just as soon leave him in Louisville to gain more outfield experience.

Beltran is a Giant.

Also, WHY DUSTY WHY.

Got that out of the way.. every game is a must win. I kind of feel silly holding onto hope but whatever. Just win for the sake of winning, okay?

I don't get all the disgust about Alonso not starting. Walt brought him up. And Heisey's defense probably comes close to making up for Alonso's yet-to-be-seen offensive production. It's debatable, no need to blast Dusty for this one if you ask me.

Dude is so concerned about his record as a manager in the macro sense. He always seems to know what his record is at during any interview.

Guess with both Heisey and Alonso you need to see what you have.

You're probably right, and I probably overreacted a bit. But I guess if Dusty wasn't willing to name Heisey the guy outright over Gomes, then why do it outright over Alonso? It seems he needs to at least split the time in LF to see if Yonder can hit in the bigs or not.

The real question is, will Fred Lewis play over Alonso?

reds1869
07-27-2011, 05:25 PM
Wow. There really is no pleasing Redszone is there?

No, I guess not. For me the issue is I really want to see whether or not Alonso can hit consistently up here. I love Heisey but he is probably not the LF going forward. I'm with the poster who wonders why Dusty was willing to trot Gomes out there but not Yonder. To me it makes zero sense to call Alonso up to play the role of a two position Miguel Cairo.

Very soon I'm sure Walt will instruct Dusty to give his young kids playing time. Alonso, Frazier, maybe Mesoraco, etc.

Dusty probably hasn't yet adjusted to the reality that his team is out of contention.

The minor league guys usually play big league ball in September.

For the Reds, it probably will be mid-August through September this year.

If Alonso is not traded, he will get plenty of opportunities this season IMO.

Funny. Didn't seem to mind Johnny's range out there when they were trying to win.

Gomes hasn't been starting in quite a while. It's been Heisey & Lewis for the most part.

As for Yonder, we DO need a lefty on the bench. And truthfully, I still think a deal is going to be made with Yonder included in it.

Heisey will get most of the time in LF for now, Dusty Baker said. (For those wondering about Alonso, Baker said his speed and range remain question marks in LF and that he is more a first baseman. Baker wants to observe him in practice while acknowledging that yes, he can hit, and he brings a strong lefty bat off the bench).

Seems pretty reasonable for Dusty to want to see Yonder out there for himself before just putting him in left.

Personally, I don't think Walt will do that, and I also don't think Dusty needs those instructions. He'll play them regardless.

Dusty probably hasn't yet adjusted to the reality that his team is out of contention.

I doubt that he has either...since we're not. Not even close. Tons of games left.

True, the kids should get opportunities. But that's because they're good and likely upgrades over what we have at several spots. Not because we're done for the season. But maybe I'm in the minority there. *shrugs*

I think the Reds are done. Not mathematically, but practically.

By mid-August I expect it to be clearer and the young guys will get a lot of playing time.

Hope I'm wrong and the team comes on strong. I just think it's highly unlikely and the best use of the rest of '11 is to get ready for '12.

Reyes hit a one-two hopper down the 3B line where Cairo grabbed it and fired (from foul territory) to Votto at 1st. Ball bounced off the ground and off of Votto's glove as he came up with it. Ruled a single, rightfully so. But had Votto come up with it they would have gotten him IMO.
