After surgery on his shoulder. I say just shut him down for the year.

Not a huge loss. An injured Rolen isn't any better than Cairo or Frazier. I'm all for him taking however long it takes if it means he can get back to where he was at the start of last year. I'm not even sure if that is possible though.

I think they should shut him down for the rest of the season and let Frazier take over 3B.

Basically his season is over, at his age there is no way he gets healthy and rehabs before the final few weeks of the season which ends in late Sept this year.

Rolen's defense is still MILES better than Cairo....that's what I miss.

That's why we should see what Frazier can do...

I just think it's time to call it quits Scott. You (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rolensc01.shtml) are very close to a Hall of Fame 3rd Baseman. You (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rolensc01.shtml) are basically Ron Santo (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/santoro01.shtml)from a Hall of Fame similarity perspective.

Problem is great athletes sometimes don't know when to quit...

Not with him injured it isn't. He hadn't been getting to balls that in previous seasons he did get., There's been a big drop-off from even last season to this year both in the field and at the plate.

Rolen was a great pickup for the Reds but I think his time is done. He should probably hang it up even if the surgery is successful.

Agreed. He gave the Reds one very good half-season.

Made over $100 million during his career already.

He could save the Reds $6.5 million if he retires at the end of this season, but John Fay reports zero chance of that. Gamer.

I expect this to play out like the Griffey debacle. Baker will mindlessly keep running him out there, batting him 5th or 6th, out of respect. A shadow of a shell.

When he had to have cortizone shots, one month into the season, I didn't think he'd last all year. Cairo is a nice subplant, but he is no Rolen, and he is impeeding Frazier's developement. Scott has to know the end is near, and if he was a true teamer, he'd take a cut, stay with the team, and help out. If he feels he can start, more power to him, and move him along.

I would like to see Rolen come out of surgery and play some solid baseball in 2012. Maybe Frazier or Francisco will work out at 3B, but both are far from a sure thing.

Just wondering what makes you think a 37 year old with health issues can have a solid year in 2012?

I am not sure what you are looking for here. A list of all the 37-year-olds that had productive years? Injury recovery stats? Keep in mind that what I would "like to see" is not the same thing as what I believe is most probable. But, yes - I do believe there is a chance Rolen could play another productive season. You find this utterly impossible?

For me this is where we need a GM with some balls and the knowledge of what is in the best interest of the franchise. Our GM needs to sit down with Rolen in the offseason and basically tell Scott that it's time to call it a career. He needs to explain to him that given his age, health and downward slide production wise, the Reds need to get younger and better at 3rd in 2012. Offer him a sweet job with the Reds (which I think he might consider) and move on. BUT...what our GM will do is welcome Rolen back with open arms, proclaim him as a bedrock of this team and a player we can't do without and how important he is to the team and still able to contribute. I really wished we had option 1 GM but we got good ole Walt running the show.

I guess it comes down to what you consider productive. If you think productive is a .240 hitter with maybe 7-10 homeruns, 40-45 RBI's a obp of around .275 is productive then okay, but sorry I expect more from my 3rd base position. I want to see a minimum of 15-20 HR, something like over 60+ RBI's and average over .265 and an obp over .300 which I don't think rolen can do.

It is time to see what Francisco can do. If he can rake, that makes Frazier tradebate. If he can't, it's time to shop him and see what we can get.

Lol, he's on the DL, cant do much. Not that he could do much when he wasnt. If you remember EdE, you have seen Juan Fran already.
