Welcome to Gonelong's 10th annual Reds Win prediction thread. The history of the prediction threads are at the end of this post. For only the 2nd time in 9 seasons, tORG understimated the Reds win total, and did so by a mind-numbing 7.7 Wins.

Hopefully the Sundeck will once again organize a thread and take up this friendly challenge from the ORG. Last year tORG got "SunDecked" in this challenge so congratulations is owed to all the SunDeck members who participated. tORG holds a slim 2-1 advantage in the head-to-head challenge with the SunDeck looking to even the score this season.

As always, the prediction thread request is simple.

1. Give a number of Wins you project for the Reds 2011 season.
2. Make the prediction as honestly as you can. It's a prediction, not a hope. (Please, no 162-0 "predictions")
3. Feel free to wait for opening day to make your prediction.

When I return from opening day I'll compute the average guestimate for tORG. (One again, my brother was able to secure a ticket for me for the 4th year in a row. I have only missed one opening day since attending my first in 1996. Thanks bro!) In fact, I have a True Value Reds opening Day baseball from 1997 in my desk at work. Anybody else still have that one?

I cannot remember entering a reds season with such anticipation. My son is 7 this year and is very interested thanks to last season's showing. I am hearing much more chatter around the neighborhood and at work as well. I am hoping the Reds get out of the gate on solid footing so we can enjoy a season similar to last years.

My prediction for the Reds is that they will win 94 games this season.

Go Reds!

90 wins

Bruce takes a giant leap forward, Stubbs struggles a bit. Votto has another great year, though not as great as his MVP season of a year ago. Rolen wanes; Phillips has his best year since his first in Cincinnati. Most importantly, Francisco, Sappelt, Mesoraco, and others keep the Reds from struggling so badly, as depth is once again key to an NL Central title.

Yorman Rodriguez, Billy Hamilton, Yasmani Grandal, Ronald Torreyes, and Kyle Lotzkar all become Top 100 prospects next season, with Rodriguez and Hamilton mentioned in the Top 25.

The Cards struggle, the Brewers are okay, The Pirates and Atros are bad, but the surprise of the division is the second-place Cubs.

Guys like LeCure and Maloney are nice spot-start insurance, but if this team has to rely on either of them for extended runs like I think they might, there's no way this team is posting a record north of .500.

I believe the Reds will regress this year. Starting out with three of the five starters not ready to go and Leake not really earning a rotation spot, I think things will be tough to start. This division is going to be tight and the slow start is going to cost these guys.
An 83-79 finish does not win the Central.

I predict Dusty will be under the gun on this board as he was last year when things were less than comfortable. I see lots of player personnel movement up and down the chain as there will be early struggles and some discontentment as reality sets in. The team will regroup and get healthy going into the second half but can't make up the woes of the first two months of the season.

Winning the division last year was not a surprise to me as I thought they were better than most pundits did. I said last year that I thought this year was their year to really break out. But now I am very concerned with the rotation starting out in the mode they will be, very iffy.

Look for some moves at the trade deadline that will clear the picture for coming years regarding the logjam of some positions in the chain. I believe by years end that two of the five starters will be gone from this club.

1) there are questions about each of our starters other than Travis Wood
2) sounds like left field is going to go from my original +3 WAR estimate to +1 WAR
3) I am knocking a fat 7 wins off of my pre spring training estimate
4) then adding two back since I am a big homer

90 wins, but I don't think that wins the NL Central. It will be hard to repeat when we continue to struggle with supereior opponents and the Brewers and Cubs look to contend. Last year it was Lose to the Cards and win the rest, but I just don't see the rest being as easy. Still optomistic though. Fast Start with Bailey and Cueto on the DL will gain national attention, struggles with better teams will keep us from running away with it, but in the end Fransisco will be the everyday third basemen due to a Rolen injury and his bat leads us down the stretch and hits 30 HR for the year.

94-68, Repeat as NL Central Champions, and play much better in the playoffs, but fall just short in the NLCS.

This team led the NL in OBP and SLG last season and I think their offense will IMPROVE.

I also think they'll cobble together a slightly better overall pitching performance even though there are many questions for the rotation at the beginning of the season. I think Lecure and Maloney (heck even Scott Carroll did it) can keep this offense close enough to win. I think Homer and Cueto will return fairly quickly and finish strong anyway.

I can't see any injuries to the starting eight causing much of a problem. Votto being replaced by Alonso may be the worst that could happen. I think Francisco can give us more offense than Rolen, but we'd take a big hit on defense. Conversely, Sappelt could give us more OBP, less SLG, and a big boost to the defense in left. I think he and Mesoraco will be part of the starting eight by the end of the season (and during the playoffs) whether by force or by (injury)chance.

Cheers!

They're a below-average team if post-ASB Mike Leake (which we're still seeing this spring), Matt Maloney, and Sam LeCure have to log significant innings out of the rotation.

Cueto and Bailey have no set timetable for their return (Debut?), no firm diagnosis of what exactly the problem is, and no real treatment plan other than "rest and hope it gets better." As was pointed out in another thread, they could hop back on the mound in mid-April and experience the exact same pains/ailments that sidelined them in the first place and it would be back to square one. And, of the healthy bodies, Volquez looks like he needs GPS and a personal navigator to find the strike zone, and Bronson Arroyo has an illness which has a primary symptom of fatigue and weakness -- perfect for any pitcher you're counting on to do heavy lifting for a rotation.

The rotation, currently, is an outright disaster. If Bailey and Cueto come back before the start of May, I think the team can do well and compete for a playoff spot. If both those guys are missing come June / July, I don't see how this team posts a winning record.

84 wins and the most disappointing season since 2000.

It doesn't help to have all those starting arms if they're either off form or on the shelf. The starting pitching won't be broken all year, but it's cause for concern and a root cause if this team fails to meet expectations. That being said, I think this team has a ceiling of around 98 wins if they can work through their issues. That is, they have a chance to be very good.

87 wins.

If the starting pitching was healthy, then I'd have been ready to hit 90. But I'm worried about the current injury situation and this organization's tendency for minor injuries to drag on.

The key to winning over 90 is having one of Volquez, Bailey or Cueto becoming a dominant pitcher. All three are behind schedule.

What about the Reds depth though? Shouldn't that make up for the injuries?

I feel like I might've mentioned this before, but it would be interesting to see which posters have been the most accurate, on average, over the 10 years of this great thread.

I just briefly ran thru it, no one stood out too much recently. alloverjr was killing it there for about 4-5 years. edabbs had a nice little 3 year run 07-09 (not sure what happened after that). I feel like I have done pretty fair the last few years, I at least was in the neighborhood. Problem was I kept listening to my head when my gut was calling it much closer, which I find extremely interesting.

'10 - Actual: 91 wins, Sir Charles was the only one who hit it on the head, but Johnny Footstool said 92 and the Central Champs. I had 85 but I did say my gut was calling for 87-88.

'09 - Actual: 78 wins, a host of people hit that including yours truly although midseason I wasn't feeling so optimistic then they went on a tear.

Prior to that I stunk. Which is why I did a combination of head (89 wins) and now gut (World Series Champs) predictions this year. And I gotta tell ya this start although not really all that surprising considering the opponents is making me feel pretty good about my gut feeling.
