In three career starts against the Reds, Hammel has averaged more than seven innings but has a record of 0-1.

• Colorado purchased the contract of right-handed reliever Josh Roenicke on Sunday and optioned right-hander Greg Reynolds to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

I'm all for trading Bailey, and this team needs BP arms badly, and an ace starter..Hernandez, Lecure, Arrendondo, Willis, Stubbs, Coco, all these guys should be on the block from here on out IMO.

Apathetic. Is that a good word to sum up the Reds fan base currently? 7th inning of a one run game in early August and we have two pages on the game thread.

Been that way for awhile. This teams is simply not fun to watch. The poor lineup construction coupled by fan favorites failing time after time makes people look away. The thoughts of a Volquez, Wood, Bailey, Cueto, and Leake rotation (with only one of them showing up well) is a bummer. The fact that the league has decided to not let Joey Votto beat them because the guy behind him is an easier out (and Dusty's inexplainable habit of getting the first man on, bunting him over so they can walk Votto) just infuriates me. Jay Bruce has had one good month and continues to hit in the low .200's since.

It's a lot of things.

Brandon Phillips with a game-tying PH homer!

Dave Sappelt, batting for Lewis, with a PH single!

Heisey may not have gotten a full audition in the outfield, but he certainly has had his opportunities. But unfortunately, if Sappelt wows us, Heisey may very well be the forgotten man.

Two years ago we'd all be at least a little interested with the possibility of a winning season. This year not so much.Failed expectations can really deflate a fan base and the expectations this year was much higher then just a winning season.

Fine w/that, like Sappelt much more so. Heisey is another trade piece IMO, along with those mentioned above. Too many over-valued prospects/young guys on this team, turn a few of them into a better player, construct a better team, this team is dysfunctional and poorly constructed.

We have got to do something about the bullpen.

Bray gives up a 2 run dinger to CarGo, the first homer Bray has given up all year.

Then we get Masset for the 9th, pitching badly again, gives up another run.

This bullpen needs a transfusion, and so does the starting staff. It hurt us tonight to have to use LeCure early because of the rain delay.

But the bullpen was the difference in this game. In the 8th and 9th, the Rockies, Betancourt and Street, shut the Reds down completely. Bray and Masset gave up 3 runs....

Pretty obvious. When Votto is your offense, why pitch to him. A club that, according to Walt, was based on pitching and defense, the pitching part has failed and the lack of hitters has killed them. And no relief in sight when you roll out Fred Lewis and Paul Janish as starters. Too much reliance on unproven pitchers and the failure of Bruce and the injury to Rolen plus the lack of moves.

Just sux big time.

IMHO this bullpen is worn out from over-use due to the lack of innings turned in by the starting staff and from the poor bullpen management of Dusty Baker.

Totally agree. The bottom line is that your starters have to average 7 to 8 innings. I would suspect the Reds average is more like six. That wears a bullpen down over the course of the season. You can't trot 3 or 4 relievers out there every night and expect them to be good all season.

I thought maybe there were some changes, but last year appears to be an anomaly. This organization has developed Don Gullett, Mario Soto, and um, um, um, um, well let's count Tom Browning, but after that I'm having trouble here. Oh yea, we usually have a decent bullpen and can grow those in our own greenhouse.

But 40+ years and I can count on one hand the number of stud starters that this organization has developed? Can't count Jose Rijo, he was developed by the A's, we got him when he was major league ready. Same with Harang.

Anyway, it is completely puzzling how an organization can just historically be bad in a particular phase of the game. You would think they would eventually do something drastic to become competitive in the most important area of the game.
