I'm starting to like Welsh a lot more than I used to. I don't know if it's because he's seemed to be more stat-friendly than the other guys, or if it's due to the fact that working with Thom can make anyone look like Vin Scully. Maybe a little of both.

Bases loaded, 1 out (1 in after Lewis walked with bases jacked). Votto grounds into forceout at home then Bruce K's (after being up 3-0 no less). Should've gotten more with that situation. Oh well, Reds up again at 3-2.

7 ip, 9 hits, 2 runs, 1 bb, 11 k's (career high)

I couldn't tell, but Thom said Bruce hit a soft line drive into the DP.

Bruce with the bases loaded, could be better. Twice today he ended threats with bags full.

Some bad luck that inning. Cairo walks home on Brandon's ball if it doesn't bounce so high into the stands and BP probably ends up at 3rd. Key AB was Sappelt's, IMHO, got to produce the run so they don't do exactly what you know they're going to do: IBB to Votto.

Why is Thom babbling about Chapman learning to hold runners in the offseason? Could there be a less relevant topic in the eighth inning of a one run game?

_Sir_Charles_

No decision for Cueto after the Zimmerman single to tie it up. Wild pitch to allow the runner to go to 2nd did him in.

PuffyPig
08-28-2011, 04:03 PM
I beleive it was a broken bat line drive. It looked better off his bat than it ended up being.

Still, any line drive has a better chance of finding the OF than being caught. It was just hit right at the 2nd baseman.

Kc61
08-28-2011, 04:04 PM
Reds should have a big lead today but keep failing with men on base. The last inning at bats by Sappelt and Bruce were killers.

This last couple few minutes are what drives me crazy with Dusty. Replace one crappy hitter with another, so now you are one man shorter, and you've put a worse defender in the game.

And then in a situation where there is no margin for error, you put in a guy who is struggling, when you could put in someone like Ondrusek.

Worst hitter on the team. Go ahead run in scoring position.

Not saying Edgar is great shakes, and most of his success is against lefties. Still, you can't leave Janish up there.

Of course, with all these machinations, why risk the game with Masset?

I could agree with Cordero....but Logan & Jose have been pretty shaky too. Personally, I think all those innings the relievers have had to throw this year (especially early on) have started to come back and bite them. The gift of Edinson Volquez just keeps on giving.

Arredondo has been better than Masset lately. So has Coco. Ondrusek was doing poorly, but is now healthy. Even he was a better choice.

Thing is Dusty had Coco and Masset in the 'pen, and would've brought Cordero in for the save. Thing is, tie game, 9th or later, you play to win at home. There wouldn't have been a later save chance anyway. So if Cordero is your best 1 inning pitcher you have available, you bring him in right here. Dusty and his "closers are just for saves" philosophy!

Oh well... Yonder ties it up!

It was just an observation, I'm not going to judge Sappelt's season on that play or anything. It was an amazing throw...but if Sappelt hadn't slowed he would have been safe at third. I want the Reds to win this game, don't be so defensive.

I just timed Dave Sappelt there. He got to third base in 11.86 seconds. That is blazing fast. I have Drew Stubbs timed on a triple where he went sliding into third. His time? 11.80 seconds. Sappelt was out because of a GREAT throw, not because he didn't get there fast.

That wasn't my point, and I think you know that. It was that pretty much every player in baseball was going to be out on that throw. Besides, I hate to pick on Sappelt after he just put a charge in the ball like that. Especially considering the slow tappers we've been treated to lately from him.

Ankiel grounds a single to 1b, and then Arredondo is wild and walks Morse.

Arredondo is pitching because Dusty is playing by Little League rules and is afraid he can't get every player into the game.

Bad umpires today.

These umpires were pure crap all weekend. Horrible calls on both sides. West,Fairchild and Holbrook are just the pits. The other guy,Schrieber seemed OK. But those other three are a disgrace to MLB umpiring. I've said all season this crew is the absolute worst in baseball. They have been in more scrapes than any crew I have ever seen. Three managers getting tossed in one game is very telling. The out call at 2nd was horrid and Votto was extremely lucky he wasn't called out on strikes the pitch before his game winning HR. By the K zone it was easily a strike and he should have been rung up. OK I feel better now. :D
