Philadelphia's Vance Worley has numbers worthy of National League Rookie of the Year Award consideration.
The right-hander leads first-year players in ERA, is second in wins, fourth in games started, fifth in innings, sixth in strikeouts and second in opponents' batting average.
Worley is riding a seven-game winning streak, and has been crucial to a rotation that needed to fill holes when injuries were suffered by Roy Oswalt and Joe Blanton.

"Obviously he's a guy we're going to protect," Jocketty said of Mesoraco. "It's a chance for him to get some exposure and get used to seeing what it's like in the big leagues. We'll see what he can learn the last month of the season."

Cincinnati's Mike Leake could be pitching for one of the final times this year. The right-hander will make his 27th appearance and 24th start of the season, and the Reds plan to cap his innings soon. He is currently at 152, counting both the big leagues and two short outings in Triple-A Louisville. Leake earned the victory in his last start against the Nationals. He allowed two runs on six hits over six innings. Since the All-Star break, Leake is 3-4 with a 3.60 ERA and six quality starts. "He's close," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said. "He might have another start or two. We'll have to talk to [pitching coach] Bryan [Price] about it in a couple of days and figure out what the right number is. It's pretty soon."

Worth noting
• Carlos Ruiz has hit safely in 12 straight games against the Reds.
• Cincinnati is 12-29 over the last six seasons against Philadelphia.

Baker said Mesoraco will catch some bullpens, get acclimated a few days before playing

Interesting that Francisco is immediately installed at 3B and hitting 5th. Seems a reassertion that of all the young hitters he's Dusty's favorite.

I can see giving Mez a few days before he starts. It is diffferent for a catcher. You normally can't just throw a new catcher into the fire. I'm glad he's giving Francisco and Alsonso a shot today. Francisco just has to be sick about this season. He would have a great chance to play a lot in Cincy if not for his own injuries. I hope he gets a lot of time in September. I've thought he was an interesting hitter that could go either way. A star or a bust.

Worley has fit right in with this Philly staff. 9-1 and a 2.65 ERA. As if the Phillies didn't already have enough pitching gee whiz.

 A Leaky left side that's for sure. But I'm glad Alonso and Francisco are playing. You have got to find out if these guys can cut it or not.

I here he's been dating Dusty's other daughter.

Just wait until his youngest son, you know the one who's life was saved at home plate in the middle of the world series, starts dating. The Reds will cross the barrier and be the first major league team to have a female starting for them. I think Gloria Allred already has applied for membership into the Rosie Reds. :)

Gotta love that left-side defense for Leake today. Sheesh.Dusty has looked at the spray charts and noticed that they won't see much action...oh wait, Leake's a groundball pitcher...well, so much for that rationalization. ;)

Doesn't take those pesky walks to clog the bases.

Inning over 3-0 Phillies
Leake at 51 pitches through 2 innings.
3 runs that inning by the Phillies is one more than the Reds have in the 3+ games so far this series.

Have to give Doug credit again. Alonso might be passable in LF after all.

3-1 phils

09-01-2011, 02:05 PM
Stubbs needs 1 more K to tie Mike Schmidt for 25th on the all-time strikeout list at 180. Would be fitting against the Phils. On pace to join Mark Reynolds as the only +200 guys in history.

klw
09-01-2011, 02:09 PM
Leake with the quick 9 pitch inning- Votto with the sweet unassisted DP to end the inning.
Renteria with the double but Votto K's for out #3. Reds now 1 for 18 with RISP this series.
Phillies are 4 for 5 with RISP this game. (They were 2 for 20 in the series before today)

Howard homers to make it 4-1 after 5.5. Leake at 97 pitches. Hopefully dusty won't run him out for more.

The Reds don't compete well with good teams period. Great ones like PHI aren't even a consideration.

I read in Fay blog this was the first time since 1916 that the Phillies had swept a 4 game series in Cincinnati.
