Well looks like the Phils are going to ink Jason P of the Red Sox to a 4 year $50 million dollar deal. This is the first big deal for the reliever/closer market which the Reds may or may not be involved in. Was this a good deal, how does it impact the Reds if at all?

I can't imagine the Reds were going to be in on Madson, Papelbon or others, given their experience with Cordero, and so I don't see this contract really impacting the Reds' bullpen plans.

If it drives up the market for FA relievers, however, maybe teams will have less money to spend on other FAs, and perhaps the Reds will be able to save a few million dollars on, say, a stop-gap left fielder. Or perhaps that's just wishful thinking.
