I'd love to see the reds give Leake an extention similar to that of the one Tampa gave to Matt Moore. It makes perfect sense he was if you go by qualifying pitchers last year he was the best pitcher the Reds had
Here are his team ranks using qualified pitchers
ERA 1
Wins 1
IP 2

I agree, lock him up for a while.

Sure it would be nice for the Reds to lock up Leake for a long term contract.
But what's in it for Leake? He was a first round draft pick...he'll get multiple opportunities to show his worth. There's no rush for him to sign anything that would be below value.

Yea but come arbitration he COULD become expensive, by signing him to a long term contract he would give some up on the back end but get more on the front end (which is what we need to start doing when we sign people either the same salary every year or more on the front not on the end). Something along the lines of Wade Davis extension is what he would be interested in:

4 years / $12.6M, plus club options '16-18
'12 - $1M
'13 - $1.5M
'14 - $2.8M
'15 - $4.8M
'16 - $7M
'17 - $8M
'18 - $10M

Leake is the kind of guy I want in our rotation for a long time, but this is too early to be talking contract in my opinion. Bigger fish to fry right now.

It's the cheapness, not how long we hold onto him that matters. If we can give him a nice payday upfront for some flexibility down the line, his trade value is gonna look sterling even if he doesn't really improve (and I believe he will). This is what the Rays do well: hammer out the contracts of hot young players early so that down the road we hold the upper hand in trade negotiations. If we're not gonna pursue anything in free agency, we ought to go ahead and make some of those extensions right now.

Why would it be too early to think about an extension? Matt Moore just signed an extension after 17 IP; Evan Longoria signed after 17 PA; This would be one way we avoid the Joey Votto dilemma we have right now. I know Leake won't become a TOR arm but he's someone we need to keep around for as long as we can.

Definitely. Maybe even look into giving Mes a contract... his value will skyrocket if he shows what he's capable of.

I like Leake, and I think he has room to improve over the next few years, but Moore is two years younger and has about 6mph on his fastball over Leake. Moore, that is, might very well be a better pitcher right now, and almost certainly has more upside. With that in mind, I'm not sure I'd be comfortable committing as much to him as the Rays did to Moore.

Rays committed up to 8 years on Matt Moore; I was thinking his arbitration years plus club option years!

Every team should take a page out of the Ray's book. I like how they sign all there young talent for many years and cheap. look at Longoria. mabey the best third baseman for what he makes. I agree lock Leake up. hes the most consistent starter the Redlegs have.

What? Did Leake steal some more tee shirts?

Never too early to sign Leake to an extension. IMO he's one of the few pitchers I'd offer one to.

Can we add Mat Latos to the list of players we should extend while young?

Better idea, get a SS and LFer.

Better idea, get a SS and LFer.

It's not the extension will cost us all of our money this offseason!

For both Latos and Leake:

12 - $1.25M
13 - $2.5M
14 - $4.5M
15 - $7M
16 - $8.5M: club option

If we do nothing else......make sure we can pitch.

With the likely departure of Votto and the trading of Alonzo & Grandal........we will eventually have trouble scoring....more than we already do.

Our offensive ranking is misleading.

Our offensive ranking is misleading.

I agree the next move should be getting a cleanup hitter, but there is nothing misleading about playing 162 games and finishing 2nd in runs.
