I guess the take home in all of this is if you're in radio, rent, don't buy. I don't know how Tracy Jones has hung on so long

Thompson fired while on his honeymoon

Clear Channel usually fires people over their Christmas schedule. I guess this is the best next thing for them.

WLW used to be on XM. I was bummed when it got eliminated. I had the best of both worlds. Love THE TRACER. Loved to listen to EXTRA Innings at night in crystal clear non static satellite radio.

He was actually informed of the decision on Friday. He got back from his honeymoon on Thursday.

It was either then, before his wedding, or this morning after he shows up and is ready to go.

Never a good time to do it.

He also still works for Clear Channel. He does a show in Richmond, VA, in which his numbers are excellent. He still has that gig, just not this one.

I did about 4 years ago. The people they have on the radio around here were god awful then, and have gone down even further since then.

For a span of about 25 years, I pretty much always had WLW on. I just thought it was a great radio station. McConnell,Burbank, Trumpy, Collinsworth, Furman and Willie were people that I listened to on a daily basis . Other than to listen to Reds games I never listen to WLW anymore. I invested in XM radio and haven't looked back.

There must be considerably more to these firings than we are being told.

My thoughts as well. Matt, do you know anything that you can share?

Just bought a new car with XM radio in it. Wow do I love it. My radio was always on WLW or KRC. They haven't been on once since I first sat down in the car. I find myself just sitting and listening for 5 or 10 minutes after I park. MLB radio and the comedy stations are just awesome.

That was nice of them...I was in radio for almost 20 years. Got fired twice in that time.

Despite my really poor opinion of CC and most corporate broadcast companies, radio HAS ALWAYS been a business where you have to keep producing and even then sleep with one eye open so, getting let go before, after or while on a honeymoon isn't something new to radio or unique to CC.

Here are some examples.

I worked in Tampa with a station where the evening jock's mother passed away suddenly, he went home to be part of the memorial and grieve with his family...the weekender did such a good job the company decided to keep him and told the other jock he should "stay home for two weeks longer"...he did and when he got back, the weekender had his shift and they ended up firing the afternoon jock who was replaced by the grieving night jock!

It backfired on them though...he figured they were up to something when the offered him more time off so he started looking for and too his surprise FOUND a gig in his hometown.

On the day he was supposed to return, he didn't and the station he was working for then promoted the weekender to afternoon drive...that kid was in the right place at the right time!

So radio is a sort of sleazy business to begin with...but I loved it!
