At one time I had him pegged as a Cy Young Award winner. I missed that one.

In related news the Reds have also signed 69 year old Jack Billingham to a minor league deal with a spring training invite after watching him eclipse the 50 miles per hour mark on a radar gun at the Golden Sunset Retirement home in Goodyear Arizona.

I didn't know those golf carts got up to 50. :beerme:

Wasn't Tomko our 1998 opening day pitcher?

Edit: 1999

What is the downside?

I agree, no downside. He provides a possible option of a pitcher who has from time to time had decent numbers. Certainly better than some previous #5's the Reds have had.

What is the downside?

Can't see much upside or downside as long as he doesn't block someone's chance to advance

What is the downside?

The proper question is, "What is the upside?". The answer is none. A foolish move. If he takes the mound for the Reds even once, that is one time too many.

Tomko, to me, is the reason that I do not get all bent out of shape when the Reds trade prospects (or as this board sees them - future hall of famers - i.e. Zach Stewart, Brad Boxberger, etc) for proven talent.

He obviously has some staying power, having pitched in the big leagues for all or parts of 14 seasons, but he is anything put a dominant player and he was the best pitching prospect in the organization at one time.

Have the Reds gotten better in the prospect department since the days of Tomko? - it appears so - but it also proves that prospects are just that, prospects - not necessarily future All-Stars or Hall of Famers.

As far as Tomko pitching for the Reds this year - if that happens then things will not be going well.

Why is it a good move, simple versatility and major league experience. Throughout a season pitchers come up hurt, need rests and such and Brett can fill a number of different roles if needed. Again there is no downside to this move, glad to see Walt thinking ahead.

Now if we can just get Mike Cameron back we can pretend that the KGII era never happened.

Its just depth. If nothing else he and Corky Miller can help continue the advancment of the younger pitchers in triple A. Minimal money + depth = a good move that doesn't hurt the team.

What is the downside?

If we pay him 1 dollar. Thats a downside.

It would be nice if he could still get batters out. Versatility and major league experience mean nothing without it.

If I remember correctly, I believe that we also looked at Dmitri Young earlier this offseason too! These guys were my childhood.... Alex Ochoa, Michael Tucker, Pokey Reese, Sean Casey, Scott Williamson and Danny Graves should all be targeted to bring back a late 90's team!

Foolish? It's a minor league contract. If the Reds have injury problems and they get to the point where they need a spot start from their second or third option in AAA, I'd rather see Tomko get it than someone like Reineke.
