A couple starts under his belt and all. Not doomsday if he doesn't pitch well but I think tonight may give us an indication of what we get from him this year.

Tim Lincecum says hello.

Since when had Latos ever been on Big Time Timmy Jims level? Laughable. He was a petco park baby and we are just now seeing it.

Latos was pretty good in SD last year, he has a tendency to start out slow though with a 5.25(and rising) era in April.

That said, he and Bailey look like clones when they struggle and labor. Same stupid mistakes and errors. At least Bailey has the "poor spring training prep/lack of weight training excuse the last 2 seasons. Latos has had his injuries, but not lack of stuff ala Bailey.

Have been. Doesn't mean will continue to be. A bit much to say he is horrible.

It's good to see this forum return to some enlightened discourse. Thank you for this extremely provocative, intelligent, and original observation.

He has sucked so far. That much is true. But to assume that he is a bust after only his third start is pretty idiotic in and of itself. Not everyone is going to be lights out 33 times a year.

Horrible thus far would have been a better way of phrasing it. One positive I see for team the Reds were 5-9 at one point in 2010.

Take a deep breath. It's still April, and STL is hot. Disappointing night for sure, though.

Besides the Reds, who isn't hot?

Why did I start Latos in my league?!
Hopefully its just his usual crappy april.

Stubbs is a bum.
Id rather him hit .300 and score 0 runs. Than the 92(really good) runs he scored last year. Clutch hitting is better than crossing home plate in blowouts.

Actually, his BAA was better on the road the last three years.

GREAT GREAT outing last night for Latos - I honestly felt like if there was ANY team out there that might get him really going on the right track, it was the SF Giants  I was WELL aware of his disdain for that team.

Something I have often wondered about Latos (a lot of folks are well aware of his extremely bad "attitude problems" earlier on in his career - something he seems to have reigned in quite a bit - and good for him on doing so)...but, has anyone else ever noticed when he is being interviewed, how he kinda seems to have some minor "tics" (a la tourette's)? I've often wondered if he might possibly have a very mild form of that or something similar?

We can only hope this is the Mat Latos we see the rest of the season. I am not one to let a single start change my opinion of a guy, but a couple more like this and I could get excited.

We traded for a guy who has shown great potential. He is not a sure top of the rotation pitcher - yet. I do believe that he has the stuff to eventually be that. Three tough starts do not make him a bust in any way.
Last night he showed what he is capable of doing.

I would think we will see dusty penciling in hanigan with latos from now on. That combination worked well. He had one bad inning and didn't even allow any runs...he also pitched around quite a few leadoff hits. I wish he held runners better but last night was a huge step in the right direction...he has great stuff.

Can we hypnotize him into thinking he's pitching against the Giants every time out?

I really do think he will settle down and have a nice season. I don't know if it was nerves, weather, etc., but his April stats are usually horrendous, followed by a strong rest of the season.

He was a boss last night, though.

If he was feeling pressure in the past couple of starts hopefully this gets him beyond that and he can get down to business.

One concern I am starting to have about him though is for a guy that is supposed to have swing and miss stuff, he does not seem to be able to get swings and misses when he needs them. You can make an argument that Pablo Sandoval and Buster Posey are great hitters, but you look at all the games he has pitched in he has the same issues. 9 pitch walk to Jaime Garcia after having him down 0-2 in the count. 11 pitch walk to Danny Espinosa after having him down 0-2 in the count. These are just the ones that stick out in my head.

If he was a ground ball pitcher I would not be as concerned, but if you are a flyball/K pitcher and you are not getting a high K rate (5.6 per 9 to date) you are going to have some trouble.

Yonder Alonso - .542 OPS
Edinson Volquez - 4.30 ERA
Brad Boxberger - 6.43 ERA (7 IP in AAA)

Grandal is batting .500 in AAA, but only in 12 ABs.
