Will Wells pull a Maholm? 3 starts in AAA, 9.42 ERA, 3 HR, 10 K/6 BB

But career vs. Reds, 9 starts, 4-1, 3.88 ERA, 9 HR, 30 K/15 BB

I wonder what the politics are for calling up Wells ahead of Casey Coleman? He seems to be the more deserving first call-up. Maybe its just timing.

Last game of a long road trip, day off tomorrow, Reds need to stay focused and sharp today. One way to judge Dusty in 2012 is to see if the Reds play good ball on days like this.

Cueto pitching, should be a win today, let's hope the Reds have a good game.

Ludwick BB that was a close pitch

Kc61

Not a bad at bat by Ludwick. Lefty Bruce on deck, Ludwick got two early strikes, waited the pitcher out.

Very close pitch for ball four, but that's going deep in the count against a so-so pitcher.

I thought Wells did a heck of a good job there. He threw excellent decision pitches to Ludwick (tough call), Bruce and Rolen.

Threw 31 pitches, so maybe the Reds will get to him later on.

Bruce, the lefty hitter, was the key man there, he needed to hit the fly ball.

Kc61

I said that to myself when I saw him in the lineup.

Harris is off to a terrible start, I think he's better than this, but the numbers are what they are.

In a way, he's been a fortunate choice because he plays second base and can play when Phillips rests the hammy.

But eventually the Reds should have a stronger lefty hitter off the bench and Harris should go. Valdez is the middle infielder and the Reds can't afford two weak hitting middle infielders on the bench. They need an offensive player and neither Harris nor Valdez is.

Todd Frazier at 2B over Harris.

Kc61
04-22-2012, 02:59 PM
I think the Francisco trade has had an impact on the Reds. At least with JF, even with very few lefty hitters, the Reds had a potent lefty bat on the bench to hit righties.

No problem trading him for a good arm, but Harris really not an ample replacement. If you are going to have only three lefty bats on the team, at least make them good offensive players. Harris has had a decent career as a backup, but is older now and doesn't seem to have much left.

I think the Reds should have at least two more good lefty or switch hitting bats. But at least one. . . .

Against a below average righty pitcher like Wells, it would help a lot.

Todd Frazier at 2B over Harris.

If I recall, when Frazier played some second base in the minor leagues, it didn't really work out. I don't think the Reds view Todd as an option for second base.

I mean, they could also play Mesoraco at second. Or Mike Leake, he hits ok. But it doesn't make them second basemen.

Hopefully with two days off today and tomorrow, Phillips will be much improved by Tuesday. Also hopefully, the weather will warm up quickly for Brandon. Reds don't have a backup who can replace Brandon's bat.

I assumed you mean guys who are actually worth having, not just people like Harris who happen to stand on the first base side of the plate.

I think the proposals I outlined would get the Reds guys worth having.

As I've said a thousand times, the Reds are overly right handed, have a bizarre platoon in left field, have no switch hitters (haven't forever), need patient professional hitters, need contact hitters.

Not looking for stars. Just guys who will have the lefty/righty percentages on their side and make consistent contact.

So in games like this they can get an occasional sac fly or key base hit against a sub-par righty starter.

Last few seasons, Dusty's overuse of relievers drove me crazy.

So far this year, Dusty's bunt plays are driving me crazy.

There was no reason for a squeeze play there. Harris is a lefty hitter who can hit a fly ball or run scoring grounder there.

What amazes me about Dusty is that his bunt plays so seldom work. His players don't bunt that well and the plays usually fail. Even the pitchers don't sacrifice that well, or at least it appears so.

Couldn't agree more. I've been sounding these themes as long as you have. I just think that the trades we made--particularly that for Latos--have used up pretty much all the "fat" in the system, if you will. Trading from here on in is pretty much cutting to the bone.

You're right. But they can still swap guys, like Heisey, for a different outfielder who hits lefty and is similar in quality.

And with the Votto and Phillips signings, the team has minor leaguers with no real future because they play first base or second base.

They can still do some things.
