Everyone is going to love this lineup:

Reds lineup:

Heisey 8
Harris 5
Votto 3
Phillips 4
Bruce 9
Ludwick 7
Mesoraco 2
Valdez 6
Bailey 1

I have no problem with giving Stubbs and Cozy days off as they're scuffling. Rolen takes 'em all the time, and could certainly use one also. Mes needs to play more as it is.

But for the love of God... FREE FRAZIER!!

EDIT: Even if Dusty's man-love for Harris compels him to play him today, put him in CF. Heisey could sure use a day off too.

Well that is different.

Cubs lineup
DeJesus rf,
Barney 2b,
Castro ss,
LaHair 1b,
Soriano lf,
Stewart 3b,
Johnson cf,
Soto c,
Dempster p

Makes some sense to play Harris and Valdez today to get them some time before Cairo comes back. I wonder if they are playing for jobs at this point or if they will just send Frazier down again when Cairo is ready.

I sure would have liked Frazier at third instead of Harris....

vs. righties in 2012 (small sample sizes):

Frazier is .222/.417/.444 for an OPS of .861.
Harris is .097/.125/.161 for an OPS of .286.

Of course, Harris may have a killer day against Dempster today. Lifetime, Willie is hitting .429 (3 for 7) against Dempster.

What a horrid lineup! Bailey had better pich a gem today. Also if Rolen can't play today after having three straight off days from Sunday to Tuesday then he needs to retire now. Put Frazier in and see what he can do on a regular basis.

You talking about the same Todd Frazier who had a .654 OPS against right handers in the majors, 95 PAs, for the Reds last season?

Why is he a good choice against Dempster?

I assume it is based on minor league numbers.

Harris and Valdez are veterans who should get a chance to play once in awhile. Nothing wrong with it.

Frazier is a RedsZone darling. I hope he succeeds, but I don't see the compelling need to play him against Dempster. Don't see the need for this particular game.

Now, if somebody wants to give Todd an extended trial at third base for a month or two, then I could see him playing in a game like this. I just don't see the matchup with Dempster.

I probably made my position sound more strongly than it is- Frazier has shown great plate discipline, good power, and an ability to start or come off the bench and produce in this young season. He also did well last year, posting a .727 OPS in limited playing time even with a .253 BABIP. I think he could be an upgrade to the current roster, and I think that the lowest two men on the totem pole are Harris (who I am no fan of, at all as of right now) and Valdez.

Regarding his poor OPS vs RH last year, he had a .203 BABIP against RH. So, I would expect increased production. Furthermore, I see very little upside to having both Valdez and Harris in the lineup, as neither can hit especially well.

In short, I think that Frazier should stay and that either Harris or Valdez should get the red note in their locker. But that's just me. :)

I think Dusty realizes that Harris is in serious jeopardy of losing his job in a few days when Cairo is ready to come back. Therefore, batting Harris No. 2 in the pitch-friendly slot ahead of Votto is Dusty's way of giving Harris one last chance to do something.

You gotta think he is on the thinnest of ice and Dusty knows this.

And why in the world do players need a day off after getting days off on Monday and Tuesday? That's ridiculous.

The Votto/Bruce thing has become sort of a punch line around here, and I agree that it probably is worth a try, I like hitting your best hitters in a row.

But keep in mind that on most days every other hitter in the Reds lineup is a righty facing a righty pitcher.

So using "RH" to mean right handed hitter, on most days the lineup would be:

RH, RH, Votto, Bruce, RH, RH, RH, RH, RH.

After Bruce's turn, the Reds would have seven consecutive righty hitters against a right pitcher most days. I think this is influencing the decision.

You didn't get the memo. It's still early and any criticism of the offense is premature and the Reds scored a lot of runs last year and any move to change things would be a panic move and any critic of the offense thinks the sky is falling and it's a small sample size and it's BABIP and every team has slumps and you can envision a real hot streak on the horizon and "I'm not worried about the offense" and handedness doesn't matter and the Reds offense is better than the Cards offense and wait till we play the weaker teams and wait till we hit at GABP and wait till we face some weaker pitchers and we're just running into some hot pitchers right now, and these guys will all hit their baseball card.

The Reds starting lineup needs two lefty hitters (can be platoon guys) who get on base. They also need a righty power hitter for the middle of the order. They also need one decent lefty hitter for the bench. Obviously, switch hitters will do in any of these slots.

This will require making changes at 3B, LF and CF.

It's really that simple and that clear. Actually, it's obvious.

Contrary to your statement, the writers/outfits who cared enough to state the Reds would win the NL Central do care - and would look at us now and cringe. If any of them "care" to re-evaluate their lists and document the biggest dissapointment of 2012 MLB right here, right now. The Reds are certainly on top 3-4 of that list (PHL, MIA and maybe NYY in the same conversation). That is embarrassing in my book.

I thought you'd gotten that memo. It's still early well into July this year.

You're right. That was a pretty good memo, if I recall.

Now Sean Marshall is pitching.

Never a good sign when you have to give your top set up guys and closer outings in a losing game to get them some work.

Mes' grounder was hit sharply. Might have gone through a drawn-in infield.I agree after seeing the replay, the strategy was survival, try to get the game to extras. Infield in might have also affected Mesaraco's approach in the at bat. Sveum's back was against the wall and it probably was the higher percentage move considering the situation.

Bailey pitched well enough to win. A quality start, but that's not good enough for this present offensive team. When I got home I was shocked to see the Reds had won this game. Good come from behind win but the Cubs did give it away. A bunch of walks and a couple of terrible errors did them in more than anything. But the Reds will take it and move. Sorta makes up for that giveaway to the Giants last week.
