Homer throwing well tonight. Strikeout there.

It must be tough to pitch at GABP as your home park. Just from a home run perspective, it probably plays mind games with some of these pitchers. Tonight, a few fairly long fly balls stayed in the stadium, helping Homer out. Atlanta ballpark a little more foregiving.

Now a walk to McCann, which is ok with me. Chipper then singles.

Early in the game, there was a broadcast graphic that showed that the Braves have scored 56 runs in their last 9 games.

At least twice tonight, the Braves announcers (Chip Caray, Tom Glavine, and Joe Simpson) have said that the Braves have averaged 8 runs over the last 9 games.

Would have been an amazing play if it had been made. I don't think that any catcher makes that play regularly. The throw was about 3' to the right of the plate on a hop, and an instantaneous reach and then cover of the plate hit there at the same time as Bourne's headfirst slide.

I was always taught as an outfielder to either get the throw to the catcher in the air or give him a nice long hop. Bruce short hopped him there....with the velocity that the throw from Bruce has on it, that is a very difficult catch.

I don't blame Mes too much on that. A better throw by Bruce gets him easy.

Meanwhile Homer is putting together a very, very nice start against a team coming off of a sweep of the vaunted Cards....extremely encouraging. He seems to be using his splitter a little bit more tonight to keep hitters off balance.

I don't have the numbers to back it up, but I feel like he becomes too much of a fast/curve guy every once in a while...and since his curve is so big, it's easy for hitters to pick each pitch up out of his hand.

05-14-2012, 09:20 PM
That is such a dumb play... Why do we continually give up outs? Pinch hit and take two shots at the lead. You have a good rested bullpen ready to go!

I'll defend Dusty on that play. Homer is pitching well, can't always use the pen early, Homer very capable of pitching the seventh.

But he can't hit. So you bunt.

There was plenty of opportunity by the non-pitchers to knock in Heisey, nobody came through.

On the other hand, Homer looks a bit shaky in the seventh.

So, you have Bailey sacrifice when he doesn't have one all year with your best chance to score, only to survive one or two batters in the next inning when he had 99 pitches and you had a well rested pen? That's losing baseball.

Kc61
05-14-2012, 09:23 PM
Why limit your chances to score?

Just letting a starting pitcher go as long as possible, avoiding overuse of the pen, avoiding the risk of a new pitcher.

You're probably right in retrospect because Homer is now out of the ballgame. Still, he pitched very well tonight I think it was reasonable to stick with him there.

The 7th isn't going to your pen early... I agree that Homer is capable of going back out. But what about Cozart's ABs today or the offense besides JB and JV make you believe that this was the right play?

Homer has given you a great outing, no need to push him well over 100 pitches. Homer needed a positive start, you hit for him and he can't lose and he struck out Chipper to end the inning. If the PH gets a knock then he can win the game. Give your team a chance... Giving up the 2nd out limits their ability to score! Don't go all in on a 2 out hit, especially from a rookie that's looked rough at the plate tonight.

Not disagreeing. Captain Hook knew his stuff.

But there's also the issue of constantly using three or four relievers every game. And I think there is utility in letting Homer pitch seven good innings, although he didn't quite get there.

Maybe it's my adjustment to a team that doesn't score much. Maybe this kind of offense requires pitchers to be pulled down early so a pinch hitter can possibly plate a run.
