I hate giving away outs in the 1st inning. Why does Dusty do that? The guy's already in scoring position, you're out of a double play...why give them an out there?

I don't necessarily disagree with you in theory but I can see him thinking that Stubbs is very likely to strike out in that situation so why not use the out to move a runner over to 3rd.

I agree, I don't have a problem with Stubbs bunting right there. If you are going to blame anyone it should be Votto and Phillips

If he strikes out he strikes out. Votto and Phillips still have a shot of knocking him in with a hit. The only way that move makes sense is if Votto hits a SF or groundout RBI. Otherwise you're wasting an out. If you're that confident that your RH #2 hitter can't make contact with a LH pitcher then there's a big problem

When the majority of hitters aren't hitting, it's the lineup, not the lineup construction.

It's like shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Lineup construction would make little difference if the hitters were actually producing like they have in the past.

Because, season after season, Dusty routinely puts his fastest low OBP players at the top of the order. Most people with half a brain would realize that shortstops and center fielders, on average, are not the best hitters on the team and in most cases should not bat 1-2. Not Dusty. He tries every year to make his "lead with speed" approach work, but it rarely does. The failure this year is nothing new or unusual. He may be forced to give it up at some point and the team falls out of contention, but, oh well, he can always try the same thing again next year.

I think if the Reds had a top-flight, right-handed cleanup hitter at 3rd or in left, it would make a huge difference. If they had a younger, healthy Rolen, for instance, the Rolen of the first half of 2010, they would be much more difficult to handle and a strong contender for the division title.

This would be a strong lineup, IMHO, not ideal, but competitive with any in the National League, especially when you consider the Reds' improved pitching:

Phillips, 4
Stubbs, 8
Votto, 1
first-half 2010 Rolen-level player, 5 or 7
Bruce, 9
Heisey, 7 or Frazier, 5
Hanigan/Mesoraco, 2
Cozart, 8

It could even be as simple as moving Phillips back to leadoff and move Bruce into cleanup and run with it. Dump Ludwick, get a replacement. Could he be any worse? Its a tweak, not an overhaul. But it is broken down. Like a car, it needs to go into the shop, but that doesn't mean the engine is blown. A simpler fix can often get the thing running right again.

Could he be any worse? Its a tweak, not an overhaul. But it is broken down. Like a car, it needs to go into the shop, but that doesn't mean the engine is blown. A simpler fix can often get the thing running right again.

Maybe they could just go down to their AAA team and bring up the hottest bat of the season so far, which is . . . Paul Janish. . . . Never mind.

Seriously, I think you're right. They are not that far off. I was being overly optimistic in a post above in talking about the impact a real masher in the middle of the lineup could have (adding a Dave Parker or Kevin Mitchell type from the good old days!), but the changes you mention could have an impact. Those changes along with perhaps shaking things up by finally fulfilling my dream and sending Dust in the Wind, blown away from Cincy and never seen again.

I close my eyes
Only for a moment and the moment's gone
All my dreams
Pass before my eyes a curiosity

Dust in the wind
All we need is dust in the wind

I think if the Reds had a top-flight, right-handed cleanup hitter at 3rd or in left, it would make a huge difference. If they had a younger, healthy Rolen, for instance, the Rolen of the first half of 2010, they would be much more difficult to handle and a strong contender for the division title.

The last thing they need is another RH hitter. They should have dumped Ludwick and signed Bobby Abreu. I think they just need some tweaks.

Here's a crazy thought:

I wonder if they can draft an OF next month that can hit and play LF better than Ludwick? Maybe grab a guy whose signability has caused him to drop and then grab him in the middle of the 1st rd and lure him into signing a contract by dangling a major league deal and showing him the easy path to a starting job. That could be worth more than a signing bonus. OK, probably not but it's a nice thought
