So if he's out as closer, does he return to the "set-up" role he excelled at for the last two years?

Why not give him a shot as a starter? He's got the pitches for it and has had some success starting in the past.....

I like him a lot as a set-up man. I was glad when they signed him for that role.

Our starting pitching is going to be fine, IMO. Not overpowering, but solid.

Marshall should be a set up man for Chapman..Ondrusek is not a closer nor is Arredondo. Why is this so hard for Reds hiarchy to understand? They are wasting the talents of Chapman as a late inning reliever. Make him the closer! Adam Wainwright spent his rookie season as a closer before he became a starting ace. Won a world series as a rookie closer. Learn Walt, from the organization you left.

If you're entertaining the thought of converting Chapman to the rotation after the all star break (as many forum members are hoping for) then you don't necessarily want to have Chapman as your closer now.

Exactly how do you have a pitcher whose unable to pitch on consecutive days as your closer?

i don't think people realize how often when chapman pitches in 8th he's facing the 3,4,5 hitters. holding in 8th is just as important.

Exactly. I don't want to waste Champan with 3 run leads with the bottom of the order just because it is a save situation. If he's not in the rotation, I want him used in the highest leverage situations.

There should be upwards of four guys on this team getting saves. A manager with just a little critical thinking would use those four based on the situation. If the Cardinals are in town and Beltran/Berkman/Holliday are due up in the 8th, I want Chapman in the game and we'll worry about the 9th with one of the other guys.

....but in extra innings we'll save Chapman for the 15th

I would still like to hear an answer to this from somebody in the "Chapman should be closing" camp.

Baker will never do the closer by committee thing.

He was a starter for dusty in Chicago and he was terrible i'd rather let him be the lefty specialist

He pitched b2b games against the Yankees. 2 IP 3k, 0 h, 0 runs, 0 BB, 1 SV.

43 of the 59 starts Marshall has had came in his first two MLB seasons, when he was 23 and 24.

His relative success as a reliever could largely be a function of maturity.

If Bray was around to provide another LH reliever (along with Chapman), this would be more of an issue, though I think they would still just keep all three of those guys in the bullpen.

I would still prefer to leave Marshall where he has had success
