Seems like this is a big game. Consider, the Reds lose and they go 5-2 on the homestand. If you told me that, and I didn't know better, I would assume they split with the Braves and swept the Rockies - about what I would expect them to do.

6-1 would be a very impressive homestand.

Dopn't look know but if the Reds had Heisey in for Stubbs, the entire lineup would have OPS over .700.

Regression occurs over a larger sample size.

Ludwick finally has his OPS at .705 and, for example, a HR in his first AB would increase it to .750.

Comparing Frazier to Francisco or Gomes with the glove is a stretch. He's no Rolen down there with the leather, but he's a little more reliable than those guys.

Nonetheless, even against RHP, .800 OPS for a 3B is above-average.

Maybe its just an optical illusion, but it looks like those balls on the outside are out of reach of the end of his bat. That ball breaking away or a running fastball that runs toward the outside seem to give him no chance. Probably too simple to just take a step closer to the plate, but it looks like it.

Let's give Dusty some credit.

First, let's give Dusty a demerit for using Jose in that spot.

But at least he didn't save Chapman for the ninth as the "closer." That time the flexible approach helped the Reds.

By the way, Tulowitzki is one impressive ballplayer. Putting Votto aside, if there is a better player in the NL, I don't know who he is.

OK and I understand why someone wants to bring in Chapman earlier, though I'd rather pick my spots with him and increase the likelihood they can use him in a stretch of games.

I did not picture you as someone who would want to always manage by the so called book. About time the best arm in the pen....of any pen for that matter....is stretched out when needed...and today it was needed.

I think Chapman could go 2 if he had to. I also think just about everyone in that pen could if they had to....not all the time of course, but not this .. 0.1, 0.2 innings pitched.

RedlegJake
05-27-2012, 05:18 PM
Eh...you have to use your players. That's Dusty's one strength as a manager - he believes in his guys and players usually respond to that. Show them you don't believe in them and they'll never play for you. It was Arredondo's turn to be in there. He knew it and Dusty knew it. He knows he didn't get it done this tie, too, and he's kicking himself for letting Dusty and the team down but at least they won. I think Dusty did it all the right way - he didn't stay too long with Jose but he did send him out there when everyone on the team knew it was his turn because of the other guys being used. Sometimes Dusty gets way too much criticism. If he has one real strength it's the way he handles the pitching staff.

The new record for combined HR in a homestand got me thinking about absurdly trivial trivia, and how today's game might be worth a footnote or two.

Namely, the 5 hits given up, all of them being home runs. Using baseball-reference's play index:

* Today was only the 4th time in history that a team gave up 5 or more home runs in a game and NO OTHER HITS. Oddly, the most recent incident of this was just a couple weeks ago (Texas did it against Baltimore on May 10, 2012; Texas also did it on 6/24/89 against Cleveland, and Detroit did it against the Yankees on 6/16/2004).

* Of these 4 incidents, today's game is the first time a team has WON a game while giving up 5+ HR and no other hits.

* Mat Latos becomes the 6th pitcher in MLB history to give up 5 or more HR and no other hits. Colby Lewis (TEX) was the previous most recent guy to do it. Also: Ted Lilly, Charlie Hough, Steve Stone, and Denny McLain.

* Mat Latos becomes the FIRST AND ONLY ONLY pitcher in MLB history to give up 5 or more HR and NO OTHER BASERUNNERS. No walks, HBP, errors, etc. Five hits, all home runs, but never had to work out of the stretch once. Wacky.

* And Mat Latos becomes the first and only starting pitcher in MLB to do the 5+ HR and no other hits and still get the WIN. Delicious.

Thus ends my addition to useless knowledge....
