Yesterday, single season strikeout champion Mark Reynolds whiffed in the 4th inning for his 1,000th career strikeout. Sadly/amazingly he accomplished the feat in only 2610 career AB.

Whom did he steal this record from by only 6 AB?

Best guess, given this is a Reds message board, is the Big Donkey.

Big Donkey was around 3100.....Stubbs is on that pace as well.

OK, last guess and I'll let someone else play. Might as well go for the All-time strikeout king - Reggie Jackson.

Hit me like a ton of bricks. Think three true outcomes. Used to play for the Reds at one time. Played for a long, long time to get to 1,000 Ks. RB

I was going to go with Dave Kingman. Never would have guessed Branyan.

The "three true outcomes" was the key. A lot of walks keeps your at-bats down as opposed to plate appearances.

Deer was a close one....he didn't walk much did he? The key is strikeouts per AB. Dunn and Howard strikeout a ton.....Dunn walks a lot but both have the same K/AB ratio.

Old school K guys like Reggie and Kingman can't compete with the guys nowadays. If Dunn plays a few more years he could join Thome as the rare combo top 20 all-time walks and whiffs.

Looks like Deer was a little above average on walks. The year he hit .179 with a million strikeouts he did walk 89 times for a career high.

Dunn with 4 K today! Lookout Reggie and Reynolds!

I tweeted this question to Tim Kirkjian as I put this question on here....Kirkjian just went through this on Baseball Tonight just a few minutes ago...he changed it to plate appearances and mentioned how close Branyan and Deer were.

That's pretty cool.
