The Blue Jays have released him. Seems like he could be had for a reasonable price.

His numbers were looking good, wouldnt hurt to sign him cheap and see what he has left, couldnt do any worse in LF

Can he still play defense in left field? Like, even at a serviceable level?

I'm not asking to be disparaging, I just really am curious. I used to love watching him play, but admittedly kinda lost track of him last few years. If he can really only DH at this point in his career, I don't know what he'd bring to our club.

He is nothing more then DH material at this point.

36 games played last season. 0 in the field.

Shame too. He kills righties.

Well if the NL would get on board we would have the DH..

Couldn't do worse batting 4th either.

No thanks on the DH. I prefer to watch baseball.

He just can't run anymore. He labors to get around in the outfield. On the other hand, he would probably be a better bat than Ludwick. He would also hit into a lot of double plays. Do you give up defense for offense? Our offense has been so poor, I just don't know.

Don't disagree as it relates to batting.

Do disagree as it relates to left field. We've got some pretty darn good fielders there at the moment.

Within the last hour, The Red Sox have released Marlon Byrd. What about him?

He's sucked all year....and all of last year.

Would agree with the DH material comment on Vlad. I would take a flyer if he were willing to pinch hit - and if he was left-handed.

I really like Vlad. At the very least he is better than most of what is on the bench now, but I think he could still be an everyday player.

As the 25th man instead of Negron. Absolutely

I don't think Vlad will want to be a bench player/pinch hitter. Also I doubt he wants to be in the field. Looking for a DH job.

is baseball watching a pitcher go up to the plate and watching 3 strikes right down the dick?

He does not need to play the field, how many times did Costanzo take the field

Be a nice bat off the bench and a spot starter like Valdez.

Really then why sign with the Jays?

No way he was going to bump Edwin Encarnacion from DH, Edwin is hitting .290 with 17 HR

I guess your right. Maybe its just me that doesn't want him in the field.

Good point. But do you really think the Jays expected .290 with 17 HR from Edwin to this point, this season? Both his average and HR pace are on track to make his a career year for him by a landslide.

I could see the Jays riding him out as an insurance policy until such a time as they needed to make a move or he requested one, though. Sorta like the Jeff Francis thing... even though that clause was contractually built in to his agreement.

Was there anyone here on RZ who was against the Rolen deal because they didn't want to give up on EE?

Other than picking up Simon, has Jocketty made a good move since he's been here?

Before it is all said and done, I think Reds' fans are gonna be glad Mat Latos is wearing the wishbone C.

JJ Hoover, Sean Marshall............do you see them as bad moves?

Who's JJ hover? They seem afraid to pitch him.

At the very least for 3 million per, I expect Marshall to come in a game and get a guy like Fielder out. Even Bill Bray could do that. So far he has been a major disappointment.

I think he'd be about as affective as Johnny Damon's been for Cleveland.

At least the Tribe can have Damon lead-off.

As someone else said, you're trading bench versatility for potentially improved offense in Vlad's case. Way things have been going, I'm not saying I'd hate the idea.

I just am not sure the Reds would share my sentiment there.

I don't know. A team that is arguably not as good as the Reds does not want him, that says something to me.
Or maybe the Jays are as good or better than us.

All teams are not created equal. Every team has different strengths and weaknesses, regardless of their position in the standings.

I will likely land in the minor leagues at this point. He is over weight and from what I understand has some knee problems. So glad I got to see him in his prime.

He's 24...please remember that, many 24 year olds are still maturing mentally and physically.

What position do you play? Are you a lefty or righty?
