Within the last hour, the Red Sox released Marlon Byrd. Is he worth trying to get?

It appears that his skills have declined rather quickly. Personally I would not be opposed to it - if he would agree to be a bench player. I think he's better than most of our bench.

Dusty would try to start him, which would be the waste of a month ... no thanks.

I would be for going after him, like you said he is better than our bench.

I think he would add value to our bench, but just about anyone would.

I would rather see the Reds call up Gaithright and give him a shot first.

Not adverse to giving Gathright a shot, I suppose, but I'm not sure he's the long term answer at even a marginal bench improvement. Lots of time spent in independent ball in his career (where he most recently hit .240 for his previous team) and he's never gotten much more than a cup of coffee from anyone since he was non-tendered by the Royals in 2008.

If he would agree to a more limited role and the paycheck that corresponds with that, I do think Byrd could be a valuable bench piece.

Byrd's already been released by 2 teams this year. No thanks

I'd like him as a bench guy if he's up for that role. I don't think he's any better that our starters in left though.
