Here's the Indians lineup. Same as last night except for the pitcher. Latos is going for the Reds tonight. He's replacing Leake who has that virus that is going around the Reds clubhouse.

1. Shin-Soo Choo (L) RF (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=choosh01&year=Career&t=b)
2. Asdrubal Cabrera (S) SS (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=cabreas01&year=Career&t=b)
3. Jason Kipnis (L) 2B (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=kipnija01&year=Career&t=b)
4. Carlos Santana (S) C (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=santaca01&year=Career&t=b)
5. Michael Brantley (L) CF (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=brantmi02&year=Career&t=b)
6. Johnny Damon (L) LF (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=damonjo01&year=Career&t=b)
7. Casey Kotchman (L) 1B (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=kotchca01&year=Career&t=b)
8. Lonnie Chisenhall (L) 3B (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=chiselo01&year=Career&t=b)
9. Derek Lowe (R) P (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=lowede01&year=Career&t=b)

It will be interesting to see what the Reds will put out there tonight with all their sickness. I saw a pretty cool article where Dusty said he was sick playing for LA Dodgers and Lasorda wouldn't let him go home and he was in uni laying on the training table. They came and got him in the 11th and he hit a game winning HR. He said he didn't even remember it. Love those classic old stories.

Mike Piazza tells the story that when he was a rookie, he tweaked something trying to hit home runs in BP with Eric Davis and Darryl Strawberry. The trainer told him he'd better go talk to Tommy, so went into the office, told Lasorda what happened, and Lasorda said, "You know, Mike, you're important to us and we want you healthy for the long haul. You just tell me what you think is best."

Piazza said, "Well, to be honest, I really don't think I can play tonight."

"You CAN'T PLAY? What the F***? You telling me you CAN'T PLAY? J**** C*****! . . ."

Good lord, that's a TON of lefties. The 2 non-lefties are switch hitters no less. This is one of the main reasons I was suggesting we look to the Indians as a trading partner. They need pitching and right handed hitters from what I can see. Something we have abundant supply of IMO.

Lefties are crushing Latos this year, with a line of .317/.379/.583/.962 (for his career, though, Latos has kept LHHers to a pedestrian .703 OPS). Still, this doesn't look like a real good matchup for Latos, especially given the Little League fence in right field.

And Valdez had a good game last night, but he has no business batting second. Lowe is going to mow him down tonight.

Yeah, but sometimes you give a guy confidence by taking him out after he's already got a solid performance in the bank. If the lead was more than 1, I'd have no problem with sending him back for the eighth until a guy reached base.

Yeah, but sometimes you give a guy confidence by taking him out after he's already got a solid performance in the bank. If the lead was more than 1, I'd have no problem with sending him back for the eighth until a guy reached base.

Remember you said that. *grin* I'm pretty sure it's more than 1 now. :O)

Fair point btw. Every guy is different, and they need different types of motivation. I'll trust Dusty on knowing his players.

He made contact each time, once on a scorching line drive.

Those aren't bad odds if you believe in BABIP.

Swinging at the first pitch and missing badly is a bad thing. Swinging and putting it in play is not so bad.

Exactly. Sometimes the best pitch to hit that you get IS the first pitch. It's not always a good thing to "work the count" if it means you let the hittable pitch sail past.

Hitters often get credit for "working the count" when they swing and miss often.

Honest question: does anyone really think Chapman would be an instant success if he stepped into the rotation?

Aside from his having to work his arm into throwing for 6 innings, his entrance into the rotation will be a work in progress and I don't think we can afford to trade in our closer for a work in progress starter. I think he's in the pen for all of 2012 for that reason. The only way I see that changing is if we fall out of the race and we know that ain't happenin'

I certainly don't. But I also think he should be given a legitimate shot at it. I know I'll get laughed at, but I wouldn't be against stretching him back out after Bray & Masset come back and sending him to Louisville. Bring him back up if there's an injury. But I want him starting.

I always thought benching Marshall was a bad idea. A couple of bad luck games and he's no longer a closer? I never got that. But I want Chapman OUT of the closer role as soon as possible. The longer he's there, the higher the odds that he won't EVER leave it.

No. Until he learns that he has to use off speed stuff to complement his heat, he will never be a starter -- or a successful closer. It's fun to watch him hit 100+, but as we saw tonight, see him enough and MLB hitters will catch up. Lots of learning to do. I'm betting on him.

Now look, I didn't play major league baseball and I don't know what goes through Chapmans head. But I'm starting to wonder if the way people react to his fastball is getting into his head. So basically you're saying that it's OK with you if we remove him from the team while we're in a pennant race. I understand that it's important to get him into the rotation and all but I don't think it's worth jeopardizing our playoff chances. Those only come around once every ten yrs or so around here

If one believes the benefit of having him start outweighs having him close, then yes, you remove him from the team for a few weeks or a month.

Second, I reject the premise that the Reds organization is currently a team that makes the playoffs 1 in 10 years going forward.

I wouldn't move him into the rotation this year, but if one believes he can perform great as a starter in the second half, they shouldn't let the "but we are in a pennant race" angle deter them from converting him mid-season.
