Courtesy of MLB Tonight. They broke down why Latos was pitching better as of late in his past 2 starts (18 IP, 2 ER).

They said it was because of how frequent he has been using his slider, and how his slider is very deceptive, and how it's considered as an A+ pitch

This is how they broke it down:

First 14 G Last 2 G

F 58% 48%
S 26% 46%*
O 16% 6%

They said 25 outs (out of 54 outs from his last 2 games) have been recorded via the slider.

So some food for thought.

The strike-2 pitch against the final batter yesterday was an unhittable slider. At first I though it was off the plate and should have been called a ball, but the replay showed it just nipping the corner.

Have been a BIG Latos supporter since he was traded here. I will continue saying as I have the whole time that his stats will look mighty fine at the end of the year.

Latos possesses the best slider I have seen in a long time. Okay, second best slider. :)

I was watching some of the sliders on a highlight reel after returning home (I was at the game), and those sliders were NASTY!

I remember reading this article back in May:

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/mat-latos-velocity-repertoire-and-command/

Latos was getting shelled early in the season and they pointed to his limited use of the slider being one of the key things. Slider comes back, suddenly he is good again. Now if only they could figure out what Homer changed last night from the 6th inning on I think the Reds will be in business.
