There isn't a way to shuffle those deck chairs that's really going to make a big difference. The fact is the Reds need more players who make less outs. Barring that this offense is going to continue to be incredibly frustrating.

Sure there is: Phillips batting 1st is a start. Or anything where the two worst hitters are not hitting in front of the team's best.

Cozart and Stubbs are the top two outmakers on the team. While a lot of the players make a lot of outs, putting literally the two kings of that castle at the top of the lineup is absurd.

pedro
07-06-2012, 07:51 PM
I'm perfectly fine with the idea of Phillips batting lead off but regardless of where anybody is hitting when you have 3-4 guys in the lineup struggling to OBP .300 the marginal value of where they hit isn't going to make all that much difference aside from making us feel better.

07-06-2012, 07:59 PM
I tend to think that Frazier's .335 OBP would be nice in the 2-hole.

Yep, short of having Phillips, Bruce and Votto bat 1-2-3, changes in the lineup aren't going to have much effect.

I disagree there would ne effect from having BP 1st Frazier 2nd then Votto Ludwick and Bruce. You're replacing 2 abysmal OBP with 2 guys with decent OBPs. That alone would make a big difference.

Pirates are trailing in 4th 5-3 but they are threatening with guys 1 and 3rd. Zito gets out of it nothing scoring. Bedard's already been knocked out by the Giants. Pirates pen is in the game.

I'm not saying there'd be no effect. I'm just saying that sufficient studies have been done to indicate that the cumulative effect of shuffling the batting order is marginal. That argument sailed ten years ago. If the Reds want to make a real difference they need to replace some of the players they are currently running out there. Anybody who thinks that the Reds are going to substantially increase the number of runs they are scoring by juggling the current players in rotation is fooling themselves.

TMBS, I'm sick of seeing Stubbs and and Cozart at the top of the lineup too...

Until you got through the next 5 batters.

Over the course of 300 PA, having Phillips and Frazier(at their current OBP) over Stubbs and Cozart(at their current OBP) would have produced roughly 25 more times on base.

Do you really think we'd notice a tremendous difference in getting an extra base runner in front of Votto every 3 games?

That's not to say it shouldn't be done, but I don't think we'd really see a noticeable difference.

Well, on that one there was a reason. Phillips was playing WAAAAY off the bag there. Cozart didn't think Brandon would get to the bag on time but as they got closer...confusion set in.

I saw the replay a couple of times and never could tell if Zack actually touched 2nd though. One of those area-code outs I guess.

SAN DIEGO — Brandon Phillips and Reds manager Dusty Baker had a long closed-door meeting before Friday’s game. The subject of those meetings is always confidential.

But it’s clear that Phillips is willing to go back to the leadoff spot.

“I’d love that,” Phillips said. “I just feel like I have more fun hitting leadoff. I feel can play my game all the way and go out and have a good year like I did last year.”

The preseason plan was for Phillips to leadoff. But Scott Rolen’s injuries and struggles forced Phillips back into the cleanup.

“I went into this offseason thinking I was going to be a leadoff man,” Phillips said. “I thought I’d be stealing more bases and doing the things I was doing the second half last year. I really thought that was going to happen. Things didn’t turn out that way.

“You do what’s best for the team instead of what’s best for yourself.”

Baker has thought about moving Phillips to No. 1 in lineup. The question? Who hits cleanup then?

“I thought about it,” Baker said. “We might put Ludwick in that situation. Brandon’s moved more than anybody I’ve ever seen in any lineup I’ve had. I don’t think I’ve ever had a player with ability to bat cleanup one day and leadoff the next day.

“It’s a finger-in-the-dike situation. It only became prevalent three days ago, the last two games in L.A. and the first one here. Brandon’s been our second most productive hitter with runners in scoring position. We’ve got to replace that, too.”

Umps are better than ever but umps in 1961 when I was a kid didn't have clear as a bell close ups on every computer screen of every fan right there either....clamor for replay if you like but don't blame the umps - there's as good as it is possible to be on the close ones.

Just my opinion.

Issue for Bronson is always how deep into the game he can go and remain effective. He's pitched very well this year, but the late innings are an issue.

Dusty tends to leave Bronson in too long, and won't llkely pull him if he's got a shutout.

So it would be good to give Arroyo a little cushion.

Jay has the third highest fly ball percentage of qualified NL hitters. IMO his problem is less pulling the ball and more popping it up.

I think GABP has hurt Jay's development as a hitter. Too focused on the long fly ball. Votto has managed to avoid that tendency and has become a great hitter.
