Berkman is supposed to be activated tomorrow.

As someone who knows nothing about his injury (even what it is), do you think he's totally ready to come back, or do you think they're maybe rushing him back a bit to play him against us?

320

If they want to bench Craig to put in a rusty Berkman that would be fine with me.

Or better yet, if they want to move Beltran to CF, Craig to RF and Berkman to 1B, they'll get an increase of offense (to the extent a rusty Berkman is better than Jay), but a big decrease in defense at 1B, RF and CF.

I don't think they're rushing him back because his injury wasn't as bad as originally expected. However I think he should have had a AAA stint. Still, he's veteran enough to give the Cardinals a competitive at bat and I expect him to get a day off every other day.

07-13-2012, 08:09 PM

It could just be a fielders choice. Just as if Cozart decided to throw to second, Phillips was at the bag, but the runner was safe.

Fielders choice means the batter would have been out, but the fielder chose to throw to a different base.

If the teams were reversed we'd be complaining that the Reds didn't score enough to put the Cards away. Cards have left a lot on the table.

No...you can have a fielder choose to throw to another base on what would be a clear out, and it's a FC

Most common one is an infielder throwing home on an easy grounder.

So everything other than a fastball is junk?
You don't have to take it literally.

A junkballer is a term used for a pitcher who does not throw a fastball at a high velocity. Instead, such a pitcher relies on breaking balls, control and guile to compensate for his lack of speed. Many junkballers are left-handed pitchers, hence the term "crafty southpaw." Notable examples of junkballers are Ed Lopat, Adiel Palma and Jamie Moyer.

With no one on would anyone else have let Latos go one more inning?

Yes. He is better then Cairo pinch hitting and just wasting a bench player in a tight game. Top of the order due up.

Yeah I don't think it was the worst decision ever to pull Latos, but I don't think 97 pitches is too much for him. And we have no bench. Maybe Dusty didn't want him going through the top of the order again.

And for those who said junk and garbage weren't synonymous

Wikipedia for "junk" in baseball terminology

breaking balls and knuckleballs, pitches that are difficult to hit due to movement rather than velocity. The term is also used to describe a "junk pitcher" or a junkball pitcher. "I couldn't believe he threw me a fastball because he had me down 1-2," Thames said. "He's usually a junk pitcher and he tried to sneak a fastball past me, and he left it up."[7] See also: Eephus pitch

In terms of this current vocab debate, where would the expression "that was filthy" come from if not from a positive connotation of the words "junk" and "garbage." OTOH, I think 44's side might point to the word "junkballer" as evidence for his case. Rarely if ever would I expect that word to be associated with a Halladay or a Kershaw, who use guile and moxie only to supplement their dominant repertoire.

Perhaps what we are dealing with here are two possible uses of "junk" (at least). If intended as the entirety of a pitcher's game ("junkballer") it is a negative, meaning that the pitcher got by with crafty stuff that was inferior. Conversely, if a pitcher like Latos throws "junk" to complement his other offerings, that can be a great thing.
