Here's the lineup for tonight. I guess we should be breaking up the rightys but we have no leftys to break them up with. No Bruce tonight. I wonder why?

1. Drew Stubbs (R) CF (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=stubbdr01&year=Career&t=b)
2. Zack Cozart (R) SS (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=cozarza01&year=Career&t=b)
3. Brandon Phillips (R) 2B (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=phillbr01&year=Career&t=b)
4. Ryan Ludwick (R) LF (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=ludwiry01&year=Career&t=b)
5. Scott Rolen (R) 3B (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=rolensc01&year=Career&t=b)
6. Todd Frazier (R) 1B (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=frazito01&year=Career&t=b)
7. Chris Heisey (R) RF (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=heisech01&year=Career&t=b)
8. Ryan Hanigan (R) C (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=hanigry01&year=Career&t=b)
9. Johnny Cueto (R) P (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=cuetojo01&year=Career&t=b)

And Ludwick, who kills lefties, sits vs the lefty and plays vs. the right.

Dusty is just proving his point to Walt. This roster blows chunks.

Of course, they probably go out and score a dozen tonight. This Bauer guy should get rocked, considering his horrible splits against lefties...oh, wait.

So Bruce plays vs the lefty and sits vs the righty? What?

And Ludwick, who kills lefties, sits vs the lefty and plays vs. the right.

Yeah, seems pretty odd. Guessing that Votto and Bruce were scheduled for off days on Monday and Tuesday post-all star game. Dusty wasn't resting them against division rival Cards this past weekend.

Reds face a lefty on Thursday afternoon, would seem like a better time to rest Bruce. Although Jay is hitting like he needs a month off, not a day.

This relief pitcher Brad Ziegler for DBacks had better be ready. He is a righty sidewinder who is murder on righty hitters. Guy could pitch 15 innings this week against the Rightyreds.

Why wouldn't you have just sat Bruce last night and played Ludwick?

Why wouldn't you have just sat Bruce last night and played Ludwick?

Probably because yesterday was Votto's turn to get a night off, scheduled before the knee surgery thing.

So if both are healthy he wants Votto or Bruce in the lineup. Doesn't rest his two all stars at the same time. (Now it's a bit different with Votto out for several weeks.)

I do agree though that I was very surprised Ludwick didn't start last night. I was surprised Heisey played.

320

Very small sample, only a few innings, but this Bauer pitcher tonight was tattooed by lefty hitting so far. 8.64 ERA against them (however one figures out an ERA against lefties alone).

No great shakes against righties either, 1.60 WHIP, but no earned runs allowed against them.

Very small sample at the big league level.

Was pretty dominant in the minors in 2011 (116 Ks in 93 innings) and did well at AA this year, then was 4-0 in AAA with a 2.82 ERA before call up to Arizona.

Lifetime minor league strikeout rate of 12.1 with 4.6 BB/9.

Guy misses bats. At least in the minors.

I'm sure the Reds will add a hitter tomorrow and send down Redmond. They only brought up Redmond because of Cueto's blister situation.

Tonight they have a very short bench so Dusty used Leake.

I don't think I need to tell you what a good hitter Leake is.I just don't get how it proves anything that he hit in that situation. Now if Dusty thought for even a second that he should save Leake in case he's needed to PH in the 9th then yeah, that could tell you something.

Sure. Short bench and he looked down there and saw the others. I imagine Jay will pinch hit if needed. I hope he isn't needed.

Yeah all Dusty said on the pregame show was how used-up his BP was (Chapman, Simon, LeCure in particular) lately, and needed a day or two off, when asked about Redman (said they needed a "long man").

I would hope they'd give H-Rod a chance soon, no reason not to add him at this point.

Kinda feels like the Diamondbacks rushed Bauer.

That's what I thought too. I don't think I have ever seen a MLB pitcher bounce as many pitches as Bauer did. He probably needs the rest of this season in the minors to refine his stuff.
Ludwick keeps on hitting. This off season pickup keeps looking better. The bullpen is just impeccable. It's really been amazing how good overall they have been this season.
I should add that this was really a slog of a game. Every inning just kept on dragging.

Ludwick was really flailing at offspeed junk early in the year, but he has settled in really well. I liked how he explained that HR at-bat last night. Said that Bauer could only throw one of his pitches for a strike that inning, the changeup, so he went up there looking for a changeup in the strike zone and hammered it.

I guess Dusty got burned by Coco too much last year and doesn't want to risk it

I think it was a little overkill to bring in Chapman, but since he was already warmed up.. why not use him?

If Dusty had no one warming up when Marshall was struggling, people would be upset, and justifiably so.

Logan's recent ineffectiveness didn't really make him a good option to bail out Marshall.. I think Arrendondo had already pitched (but I can't remember 100%)
I guess it was down to Chapman or a second teir guy.

Reds win 4-0. Combined 8 hit shutout

Any Reds win is a nice one but what a horrible game to watch. Ever heard of a 4-0 game being 3 and a half hours long? It just dragged. If Marty had done it on WLW we'd have heard him moaning about that indeed. And it would have been much longer if the D-Backs hadn't helped us out so much by swinging when our pitchers were having trouble with the strike zone

Interesting report from Elias on the Reds beat writers' blogs today.

The game last night was the first time since April 22, 2005 that any MLB team had a starting lineup of nine right handed hitters against a right handed pitcher.

Also the first time the Reds started nine righties, none switch hitters, against any pitcher since May 8, 2001, against Randy Johnson (20 Ks).
