http://marksheldon.mlblogs.com/2012/07/19/719-vs-ari/

Stubbs 8
Valdez 6
Phillips 4
Bruce 9
Frazier 5
Heisey 7
Cairo 3
Mesoraco 2
Leake 1

v.

Joe Saunders, LHP
4-6, 3.52 ERA

Saunders was activated from the disabled list just prior to his start Saturday against the Cubs. He was placed on the DL after being unable to get loose before his start on June 22. Saunders pitched six quality innings against the Cubs.
Joe Saunders will try to help Arizona capture the series in his second start since coming off the disabled list. The veteran lefty is 4-6 with a 3.52 ERA this season.
Saunders' only career start at Great American Ball Park came in 2010, when he gave up seven runs, four earned, in 7 1/3 innings.

No TV today from FSN-Ohio. I don't think Arizona is broadcasting the game either. It is listed for MLBTV so I assume they take the stadium feed and show that?

Having Valdez and Cairo for Rolen and Cozart is pretty much a wash at this point. None of them are hitting. I think I would have started Ludwick instead of Heisey. Ludwick does proved a bit more power.

Cairo should not be with the Reds anymore. I really would love to see Henry Rodriguez. I feel we will have to wait for September. I think Cairo's batting average might possibly be the worst of any Red bench player ever. Just atrocious. Walt, make a change. Please!

With Ludwick having an OPS against lefties almost .200 points better than Heisey, you'd expect Ludwick to play against them. Yet Heisey gets the call frequently, for whatever reason.

Thanks for pointing that out. I meant to mention a lefty was pitching to boot. Oh well, all I can do is watch, root and gripe about things. I can't change a thing.

D'Backs lineup. Looks like they are going with their A lineup sans Montero the catcher.

3. Jason Kubel (L) LF
4. Paul Goldschmidt (R) 1B
5. Justin Upton (R) RF
6. Chris Young (R) CF

8. Henry Blanco (R) C
9. Joe Saunders (L) P

A rainout just isn't very likely. This is the only trip to Cinci for Arizona, and the only real feasible makeup date appears to be August 13th. Off-day for each team, the Reds traveling home for a homestand, and the D-Backs going to St. Louis the following day.

Against a lefty, the Reds will probably do something at some point today.

Except lefty killers Ludwick and Cozart are sitting and Cairo is a downgrade from Votto. This isn't the team that has blistered lefty pitching all year. Seems like today would have been the day to rest Bruce instead of the other day against a RHP.

Mesoraco is my pick to come through today.

You pre-empted the post I was writing.

I still can't understand Ludwick sitting today, he's not my favorite, but he's torched lefties and has been one of the team's hottest hitters, maybe the hottest.

One issue I have with Dusty is when he decides to rest somebody, it doesn't always seem like the most opportune time. Like with Ludwick today and Bruce on Tuesday.

Oh well, maybe they will come through in the later innings.

They need to start somewhere. Maybe the let down of the Cardinals leaving town and Joey going down was just too much for them to handle. This should be Dusty's strong suit though. Finding ways to get the players back into it.

.

You can't understand bc it makes absolutely no sense. It's bad enough having your best hitter out, but you also have a manager incapable of putting forth a lineup that gives the team it's best shot at winning. Days like today are ones where the brass gets a reprieve for fielding a roster full of RH hitters. Unfortunately, Dusty has his mind made up otherwise.

Starting pitching was due for a correction. Can't really get too upset about a few bad starts. Team has pitched so well.

As for the offense, RedsZone is replete with everyone's thoughts, no need to repeat.

Still waiting for those "career norms" to kick in though.

It's not baseball. It's not having Votto. I imagine you're going to see a lot of losses without Votto.

Votto's what, a 7 win player? We are replacing him with say a 1 win player (whether it is Rolen or Frazier replacing his at-bats, sometimes Cairo mixed in). That's a 6 win gap which translates to a an extra win over 27 games.

Votto is out for say, 4 weeks, or about 25 games. Losing Votto is on average worth a loss unless he doesn't recover as soon as planned (could be worth more or less depending on how well Votto would have actually played over that span, but that's the average). It of coruse hurts, but there is so many factors that contribute to winning ball games, that even the likes of Votto don't have THAT significant of an impact over a small sample. It shows the difference between a likely playoff team (pre injured Votto Reds) and an average team (post Votto Reds) isn't that significant over 4 weeks. Thankfully the injury is not more serious.

Needless to say, not much Votto was going to do to help games like the last few days, where neither the pitching, fielding, or hitting has been noteworthy.

Yep. It isn't really an indictment of the loss of Votto either. It is the complete lack of a bench. Seriously Scott Rolen (who hasn't been good either) takes a needed day off and you bring in Cairo. The problem is that Frazier provides some level of play at or above replacement, while the other backup infielders are inept. The better lineup today, would have seen Hanigan at first and Frazier at third. Cairo is redundant and done. Valdez is a replacement level glove, who hasn't really hurt the team. Paul is roster fodder. Walt has to do something.

For me, a crazy high BABIP ain't just all luck. Definitely some, but he's thrown some stinkers as well. Hard hit groud balls, while technically not line drives, have similar results as line drives.

Marshall is still very good overall, but he's not been as good this season as he has been the previous two.
