While I like Ryan Braun as a player, and I wish him lots of success in his future endeavors, let's hope the Brewers are bringing him back from injury a bit soon and he's not at his best this weekend. Like to see the Reds take two of these three games, at least.

He was limping pretty bad on Tuesday, so he usual inept fielding may be even more inept than ever.

Aoki strikes out looking
Gomez hit a groundball to Rolen, Rolen reached to his right, but it went under his glove. That was a tough play, they ruled it a basehit.

Stubbs isn't the only guy who gets two strikes on him a lot. Phillips does. Others too.

Drew, though, doesn't foul off the two strike pitches. He just flat misses them.

I wish he could learn to foul off pitches and stay alive.

VottoFan54

I got the feeling that at bat that Mes didn't want the walk. The last two pitches were probably ball four.

With pitcher up next (and Stubbs after), man on third, Mes wanted to hit the sacrifice fly, and just came up a few feet short.

I really think that's what happened there, and frankly I give Mes credit for it. We all like walks but in that spot if you can make contact, I like going for the sac fly.

Right, he needs to stop swinging hard and instead try to poke something more polite to the correct side of the infield. Welsh's lecture: silly.

Sorry, can't fault Todd for taking a hack on a hitter's count.

I don't disagree, guy is a rookie, I don't expect him to place the ball perfectly. He did hit it hard.

I understand your point and see the logic.

Your point is stronger in the case of a Mesoraco, a relatively inexperienced hitter.

But a veteran hitter there, wants to hit the sacrifice fly, gets a pitch off the plate he can handle, I want the sac fly even if it fails once in awhile.

Just glancing at Homer's overall 2012 line versus his 2011, he's either lucky this year or was unlucky last year to have an ERA a half-run lower. Slightly higher batting average against, slightly higher walk rate, slightly lower strikeout rate, higher homer rate. The real difference: nine unearned runs in 2012 versus three in 20 starts last year.

Doc, when you get a chance, look at some of the specific splits for Homer. I agree that many of his stats are similar.

But Homer has pitched much better with men in scoring position this year. .827 OPS against last season with RISP. This year, .669. And generally he's pitched a bit better with men on base.

Homer used to struggle more with men on base. I think, with maturity, he's handling those situations much better so far this year.

This is Arroyo's strength as a pitcher, generally pitches well in jams. Bailey is learning that skill.

_Sir_Charles_
07-20-2012, 09:25 PM
Fantastic start for Homer. I've said this before, I don't care if he gives up a few solo shots or not, if he can limit the walks and keep the ball in the lower part of the strike zone...he'll be VERY good. If he can keep a 2:1 ratio in strikes to balls, he'll have success. Tonight, 78 strikes, 34 balls. That's fantastic.

Also I wasn't blaming either fielder on those flies - but both were catchable - Ludwick ran out of room and trying to make the over the shoulder grab with the wall there is difficult - but he had the ball and just couldn't hang on. No blame but only pointing out with either ball getting caught no one scores. Just wasn't to be. I trust Ludwick and Bruce more than any other outfielders we have including Stubbs.
