Hanigan and Stubbs are much better hitters v. lefties than righties. I don't quite understand why they started last night but are sitting today.

Looks like a 7-run lineup to me :beerme:

I researched it and we've averaged 3.7 runs per game in our get-away games this season. But we're 11-6 in those games thus far. We've only had two games with anything close to 7 runs; one 8 run game and another at 6 runs (which averages, of course, to 7 runs in those games). Also one of those "get away" games was the Mets game where we got away to the Bronx.

I'd say the career .837 OPS current Reds hitters have against Wolf says more than that record.

I agree with Kelch on that. The times I have seen Wolf he goes throught the order the first time pretty good. After that they usually get to him. I can only pick up the Brewers audio on MLB.com for some reason. So I am listening to Uecker, which isn't bad at all. He said Wolf had all of 7 quality starts this season.

I haven't read the thread yet so maybe someone already covered this, but why did Dusty pick today to give Cozart and Stubbs a day off? Cozart is hitting .281/.317/.427 - .744 vs LHP (.680 vs RHP) and Stubbs is hitting .300/.347/.544 - .891 OPS vs RHP (.637 vs RHP). That makes zero sense to me.

I commented about Stubbs and Hanigan sitting against the lefty. Hanigan has a big split between lefty/righty.

Somebody posted an article about Dusty addressing the Hanigan thing, saying he needs to get him fresher and plans to play Mes two games in Chicago. And, of course, Navarro homered so who needs Hanigan today (joke).

As for Stubbs, I agree that it is odd timing.

Something just isn't right with him this season. He just seems out of sorts mentally. That could be any number of things, on or off the field. But I actually think he's taken a small step back this year instead of a leap forward, which is disappointing. Still a productive player, but not having the season a lot of us hoped for.

I agree on Stubbs, I think he should be in the lineup over Heisey. But I don't mind Valdez over Cozart. Cozart's really been struggling, and even though he hits lefties better than he does righties, it's not like he tears them up like Stubbs does. And the best bet of getting some production out of Valdez is against a lefty I would think.

Cozart has had his problems, I agree, but right now he's pretty hot. He's OPS'd .922 for the last seven games and I thought he was terrific in the Pirates series.

The guy who needs some bench time is Todd Frazier. He's hitting .160 with a .542 OPS over the last seven games and he's fanned twice today. He looks tired to me, or just not his usual feisty self. But I guess resting Rolen, day game after night game, took precedence. When Votto comes back, maybe Todd will get some days off.

Supposedly, an "eephus" is a junk pitch, thrown at a velocity of 55 mph or less. It is thrown as a normal pitch, but approaches the plate at a slow velocity.

Come to think of it, that's the only pitch I have ever thrown ...

Gomez needs a rude awakening for his display after that HR. An arrogant fling of the bat, a smack of the helmet with left hand as he rounds 2nd, blows a kiss and points to the crowd about 15 feet before touching home... then one more kiss and point after touching home.

Lots of guys have a routine (BP of course), but Gomez crossed the line IMO. Too much.

As the season has worn on, Frazier is looking more and more comfortable at the hot corner. I know some attribute that to Rolen working with him (and I'm sure that certainly can't hurt) but I think more reps is what it's mostly attributed to. Not having Stubbs-Cozart in the field killed the Reds this inning. But we know those guys in their late 20's need their rest.

And now Ondrusek. Sweet.

I suppose when a team wins 22 of 25 games, it naturally is going to use up its fair share of fortuitous bounces. Now the delicate balance of nature is thumbing its nose at the Reds for being too generous in the first place.

Latos was pretty much just dominating. There was no reason to pull him. But you can pin this one on the offense too. Bases loaded, one out, and nothing to show for it.

He pitched 7 innings, about 100 pitches, and we have the best bullpen in the majors. Aoki just made contact and got on base with two outs. I'm mad as anyone about this game but pulling Latos was a coin toss.

No reason? Well he was right at 100 pitches and the pen has been absolutely nails.

And sure, you could blame the offense, but I think you've got to hand out equal portions of responsibility there to the Brewers defense. They've played VERY well today with the leather.

Thing about Broxton, he doesn't put guys away. So a lot of balls are hit. And luck plays its role, today bad.

I would have put Marshall in to face Aoki, as I said before.

Welsh asking why the NEW pitcher throws the intentional walk. Announcers always say the earlier pitcher should do it.

Reason must be that you can remove a pitcher after he faces one batter.

Bad game so far.

It was hit in front of Heisey. It was his play all along. But yes, Stubbs was in center.

But to be fair.....Janish would've had that. *grin*

I don't worry much about this offense. There is still that guy named Votto that will be back soon. I hear he's pretty good. The Reds most certainly did more without him than anyone could have ever expected. Now he'll be back soon and the offense will be fine. Not great, but good enough to get them winning again.

The Reds now face Volstad with a 7.22 ERA. Justin Germano who has a lifetime 4.83 in the majors. Travis Wood who is 4-8 with a 4.77. And Brooks Raley, a lefty in his second career start who got hit hard the first time.

I mean, it's time to win some games.

Those guys pitched well enough to win. So did Milwaukee. Someone told me last night that we were facing Wolf and he would prove why Milwaukee was nor a good team. Surprise. Apparently the bats have cooled off. Top five today were 2-20. Brutal. Of course a lineup that features Heisey (0-5), Valdez (0-4), Bruce (0-4), etc couldn't beat many teams (the way Bruce is playing). Then the bullpen fails. Bad luck. Hope it ends soon. And it will. It's the law of averages.

Homer Bailey

Reds will be fine. 22-7 their last 29. 16-7 without Votto. The order of those happening is less important than the fact that its awesome that they did this.

My memory of Broxton seems to be correct. He's fine most of the time, but doesn't handle adversity well. Some bad luck there, but it seemed liked that swinging bunt by Aoki with two outs really threw him, compounded but the Navarro throwing error.

I am not looking forward to seeing him close out close games.

Threw him?

He gave up 3 lucky singles.

It's not like the initial luck was followed by two gap doubles or a HR.

The Reds have hit into horendous luck the last 3 days. It was likely due.

We were ovbiously lucky during the 22-3 run, as even the best team in the world can't do that without a healthy dose of luck.

If he is really that bad, then next time the team needs another catcher, I say bring Corky back. Sure he can't hit, but he won't hurt you behind the dish.

There is a reason he had to accept a minor league assignment from the Reds. Good defensive catchers are hard to find and that no one was willing to sign him to a major league deal says a lot. I would say he's that bad.
