The 50 game ban is good and all....but Melky is going to win the batting title and that sucks.

Any ban of these sorts should be accompanied with ineligibility of any statistical titles.

While I don't disagree with your sentiment, Melky will not win the batting title. In fact, he fails to qualify by exactly one plate appearance (http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=4022&position=OF).

He has 501. You need to have 502 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batting_average#Qualifications_for_the_batting_tit le), right?

EDIT: Not true anymore. My bad. See Krawhitham's comments below.

Andrew McCutchen is the only hope, he is hitting .349 right now

Melky's average will be lowered to .341 because he is 7 PA short

From 1967 to the present, if the player with the highest average in a league fails to meet the minimum plate-appearance requirement, the remaining at-bats until qualification (e.g., 5 ABs, if the player finished the season with 497 plate appearances) are hypothetically considered hitless at-bats; if his recalculated batting average still tops the league, he is awarded the title. It's officially called Rule 10.22(a),

He has 459 AB and 36 BB, so that is 495 PA right?

baseball-reference.com has him at 501 PA

If correct his average will be 0.3456521739130435 or .346 same as it is without the extra PA

495 + 5 SF + 1 SH, so I think 501 is correct.

Yep I stand corrected. I misunderstood the qualification rules. Actually, in light of this thread, came across this article that you might enjoy (if you haven't already read it):

You see how this one ends, right? The National League batting race is like a bad horror movie -- only that dude in the corner isn't some psycho in a hockey mask.

It's Melky Cabrera. Hitting .346. Cheating his way to the title.

And there's nothing we can do about it. I mean, nothing but hope. Hope that NL leader Andrew McCutchen rights himself after an 11-game slump that has sent his batting average tumbling into Cabrera's neighborhood. Or hope that .342-hitting Joey Votto comes off the disabled list after two knee surgeries in a month and lifts his batting average five points.

Votto will fall short.

Melky was ASG MVP and gave the NL home-field in the WS.

Joey Votto will set things right. Votto is rested. He is intense and won't take any at-bats off. He will be facing a ton of AAA pitchers getting their one cup of coffee in the show. I expect Votto to rake.

He can't come back in Sept and do it.

Needs 125 PA IMO and I'm guessing he'll get around 70 PA.

he is 132 PA short

If he comes back for the next Cards series, (which he won't) he would need to average 3.667 PA per game
