It's fine to not understand it. But don't be a reporter with 20,000 followers and misinform people.

Calling him up does not burn an option. Sending him to the minors next year if he's on the 40 man will burn an option. The way he originally reported it, it sounded as if calling him up would burn an option this year and next, which isn't true.

Oh, right. I might owe that to the brevity of Twitter rather than Fay not knowing though. Ultimately Hamilton is probably starting next year in the minors regardless of if they call him up, so the end result is essentially that it will burn an option to call him up.

I'm just walking through this, and don't pay much attention to the option rules.. But, my teacher always said, there is no such thing as a dumb question...

Wouldn't a September call up mean he has to be on the 40 man, therefor using an option?

Or can any player within the Reds Org be called up/played in the month of September? Or just players off the 40?

Not dumb questions at all.

Putting him on the 40 man does not use up an option. Being on the 40 man, and being sent to the minors, does use an option. So assuming they want him in the minors after spring training next year, they would be using his first option, which would be good for the entire year.

Only players on the 40 man can be called up, so someone would have to be taken off for him to come up.

Brutus

Oh, right. I might owe that to the brevity of Twitter rather than Fay not knowing though. Ultimately Hamilton is probably starting next year in the minors regardless of if they call him up, so the end result is essentially that it will burn an option to call him up.

He wouldn't burn an option next year if he's not added to the 40-man roster this year. He has another year before he is exposed to the Rule 5 draft, so if the Reds don't call him up this year, they could keep him in the minors to start next season and not use an option. The only time an option is used is if you spend at least 20 days in the minors when you're on the 40-man roster.

The only thing that would happen if the Reds call him up this year is that he'd have his 3-year option clock begin, which means they have 3 calendar years left from the time he reports until they have to expose him to waivers before optioning him.

Yessir. Basically unless you are on the 40-man roster, the club doesn't have rights to your contract in theory (technically the contracts are assigned to the individual minor league clubs).

BABIP has become a religion and if you don't strike guys out, any success is passed off as a byproduct of luck.

Guys like Cueto, or Broxton in the bullpen, etc., are successful not just because of velocity but because of movement and being able to keep the ball down.

Specifically, though, you're right Cueto has become everything you want in an ace other than not striking out 9/9.
