Reds hitters are really having trouble hitting the ball here in this new park. All those balls they cut loose on that would be a homer in most parks are just long lazy fly balls here. They need to be getting on top of the ball, hitting into the alleys and corners of the outfield, and letting it pinball around this huge field.

If the Reds lose the pundits will say that the offense didn't come through enough with men on base.

IMO, Dusty just left Latos in too long.

Pitch count doesn't tell the whole story. He has a slew of relievers available and there's no reason to push Latos in a game like this, especially after the Marlins got the lead off hitter on.

To be honest, I think Dusty was in a tough position no matter what. Fact is the Reds should have had a bigger lead. I was fine with leaving Latos in to start the 8th because while I trust Marshall/Broxton, it's not terribly hard to give up a single run against the home team with 2 innings left. The Marlins showed that with the base hit and sac bunt.

That said, he probably should have brought in a reliever to face Reyes.

Kc61
09-16-2012, 04:14 PM
Agree. It happens over and over. Mostly successful, but no reason for it at all.

With a September bullpen, the Reds could select a matchup for every Marlin player in the late innings. None of the relievers are overworked, it's easy to mix and match them.

Nothing to be achieved by leaving in Latos, he doesn't need the work, he doesn't need the confidence boost, no reason.

So he only had 95 pitches, let him have a 95 pitch day.

Just disappointing to see the Reds constantly in trouble in this series.

I don't know if there is a statistic like this, but I'd like to know how many times we've run the starter out there in late innings only to have to replace them during the inning because the opposition mounted a rally. Would be interesting.

I gotta' say, I'm getting pretty aggravated with this team. In 2010, when just making it to the playoffs was good enough after not seeing post season play for 15 years, I don't want to settle for just "good enough" this season. I know this team is a far more capable team than what they're showing themselves to be.

I'll agree with this. They seem to be basically half-assing so far in September. I get that it's hard to build up a sense of urgency when it's not really there, but still.

Tom, and the thing that's even more aggravating about is is that they show little to no semblance of the team that they were during Votto's absence. I get it that some of them may have started to wear down, but somewhere, some of these players should still be able to perform.

Foul, two and one.

Swing, two-two count now.

Foul again, Brox throwing fastballs.

Foul again, lined to right field side.

Foul tip, stays alive. Marlins TV announcers refer to floating strike zone today.

Full count on a very close pitch.

Fantastic catch by Stubbs going into that cutout and timing his jump just right.

Whew!!! I hate getting by on the skin of our teeth, especially in extra innings... I guess at the end of the day it's another "W" in the column and another number off the magic number. I hope to see better baseball being played by this team in October.

I think most people want to keep him around, as he'd be a terrific bench player that can come in late innings and run or play defense. And he'd still be an OK guy to have filling in as a reserve. Just not worthwhile as a starter.

I loved the grin on Broxton's face as Stubbs was coming in from the catch like, "boy, you really saved my bacon."

"And you know how much I like my bacon."

IDK-I've seen an awful lot of "Trade Stubbs" threads and posts.

I've always been a huge Stubbs fan, ever since he was playing at Texas. Glad we got him, just wish he'd live up to his potential offensively. I'd hate for us to lose his speed and defense. I'm still holding out hope that he turns it around at the plate.

Another interesting tidbit from the "Elias Says" blog.

From Elias: Ryan Ludwick's 11th-inning single drove in the deciding run in the Reds' 5-4 win at Miami. It was Ludwick's third game-winning RBI in extra innings this season (and his second in a seven-day span), tying him with Hanley Ramirez for third-most in the majors, behind co-leaders Adam Jones and Hector Sanchez with four each.
