I really didn't think we would see a lineup like that until clinching. But it's practically clinched. I guess we could blame Speier for this lineup since Dusty is still under the weather.

My guess is Dusty wrote the lineup out before he left. But this is pretty brutal considering Cueto is in need of a good outing, and a win would put him back in the Cy Young race.

I'm ok with this lineup today. They played extras last night, no reason to push the regulars in a day game today. Some of the guys (Phillips mostly) look like a day off would help. Probably good idea to give Votto a break too.

Reds face "contending" teams starting tomorrow. And they will be in position clinch on the homestand. So we'll see most of the regulars starting tomorrow, I'm sure.

As for Cueto, you never know, the team could score a bunch of runs for him today. I don't think Cueto is winning the Cy Young in any event, but that can't be the main consideration.

And for those who despise the Stubbs/Valdez lineups, well maybe this is an improvement!

After I had a chance to think about it, I think you're right. The regulars aren't going to have a chance to get many rest days for a while, so get them today off.

Why do you consider that a stupid rule? You need to catch a ball to record the put out, or tag the fielder. The catcher didn't and he didn't get the ball to the 1st baseman to finalize the out.

Basically agreed. I don't think he's good enough to be a starter for us, but he'd be a solid backup for the infield. Or he can be a trade piece to a team that may believe he can hit well enough in the bottom of the order. We've heard Arizona has interest, and he can't be any less productive than John McDonald.

The catcher didn't and he didn't get the ball to the 1st baseman to finalize the out.Because the hitter is rewarded for swinging at a bad pitch and the pitcher is penalized for getting the hitter to chase. It should be treated just like any other wild pitch or passed ball--any runners can advance, but batter is out.

I hear you logically, but then when first base is occupied, it suddenly doesn't matter if the catcher catches the ball to "finalize the out?"

Getting terrible, then getting top draft choices and opening lots of money to sign free agents is a perfectly legitimate way to build a ball club.

Remember the "tear it down" threads around here?

New ownership for the Stros, tore it down, then will have the money and draft position to improve dramatically as they head to the A.L. No problem with it at all.

Might have. But it seemed to me he was concentrating less on hitting home runs this season and more on hitting line drives. I'm not so worried about him not driving the ball over the wall since he came back since he seems to still be able to hit the hard singles and doubles.

I think he should be leading off, personally.

I agree. But I think the other teams are going to see him as less of a threat if he's not hitting for power. The offense is pretty home run dependent and if Votto isn't hitting for power, the Reds may not be in the postseason for very long since no one seems to be getting on base in front of him.

heh, Astros commentators commenting on the Pirates play of late "doing what they can to get under that 500 mark". Not sure they have room to talk, but funny still.

Top of 8 with bases loaded and 1 out there, see if the Stro's can blow another oppertunity to do some damage against the Cards.

I'm happy for the other team to see him as less of a threat. He missed two months and still leads the league in intentional walks.

Talk about a morale booster. The subs contribute to score 5, Simon gets a save in a playoff clinching game.

Next stop division title! :beerme:

Screwy thing with the magic number is that the Reds could clinch after their game if they win and Cards lose because of central time zone difference. So the walkoff celebration like 2010 may not work out this year.
