Heisey 7
Valdez 6
Votto 3
Frazier 5
Cairo 4
Phipps 9
Stubbs 8
Hanigan 2
Bailey 1

– 8:06 p.m. vs. Dodgers. NOTE: Kershaw starting for Dodgers instead of Harang, the Dodgers announced today.

–At this hour, there is no Dusty Baker update from the Reds. Acting manager Chris Speier again will do the pre-game session with reporters.

Ugly lineup, but what the hell, they've earned it.

I would rather see Rodriguez than Cairo. I like Henry.

I thought Frazier would get the day off, but I guess he said he's not tired. Joey should probably play most of the games to get his timing squared away. They'll get either 2 or 3 days off between the last game and 1st playoff game.

I would rather see Rodriguez than Cairo. I like Henry.

Cairo needs to get ready for a probable spot on the post-season roster.

Henry needs to get ready for AAA next year and a probable call up sometime during the season.

If Reds win tonight they will have the best record in baseball at this late date. Quite an accomplishement, hope they prevail although mostly second string lineup.

Kc61

Grounder to Cairo off Bailey's glove, one out for the Dodgers.

Ethier up now, falls behind 0-2. Now 2-2. Grounds out Votto to Bailey.

Why not during innings?

Kemp up now. Homer gets ahead on a foul. Now 1-2. Homer with 13 pitches. Now 2-2.

Strike three swinging.

FTR, Phipps is batting 5th and Cairo 6th. Fay noted this correction, though of course he still screwed up, showing Phipps both above and below Cairo.

Heisey coming up against Kershaw. One might surmise the first pitch will be a strike. Let's see what happens.

Good start for Homer

Kc61
09-23-2012, 08:16 PM
So, Heisey leads off the bottom of the first. And, to my surprise, takes a ball, but it was rather high.

Heisey ahead 2-0. Then a high strike, 2-1. Foul. Heisey ultimately gets hit by the pitch. Close call, unusually, goes to the Reds.

So now, it's Valdez. Everybody moves in. Only kidding, I like Wilson.

Wilson hits a weak grounder into a force play at second. One out.

Would have rather he bunted if he can't get it out of the infield.

Agree, but don't want bat taken out of Joey's hands. Whole point of playing Joey is to let him hit.

2-1 on Votto. Now 3-1.

Votto walks unintentionally. First and second, one out, Frazier up.

Kc61
09-23-2012, 08:23 PM
Kershaw with 13 pitches, only one out. Can't imagine he will go very deep tonight after injury absence.

Sinatra, oh I mean Frazier, falls behind 0-2.

Anyway, two down, not a great at bat by Todd, but there will be a next time.

Cairo up. Infield single to deep short. Loaded up for Phipps.

Valdez wanted to score there, but held.

Homer being Homer at home... But as long as they are single shots, I'll take em.

A homer to a great lefty hitter (even in a power drought) just over right field fence is ok with me. A solo, anyway.

Liner to Heisey, two outs.

ESPN informs that Kyle Lohse is now 16-3.

Herrera up with two outs, one in. 3-1 count. Homer with 27 pitches. Ball four, man on first.

RedsMan3203

Stubbs, Hanigan, Bailey coming up if my lineup card is correct, which isn't a given.

Drew Stubbs v. Clayton Kershaw. Right.

Now Hanigan up. Kershaw with 22 pitches.

This kind of thing never happened when Dusty was managing.

Exactly. But how many divisions has Dusty clinched this year?

Hanigan ahead 3-1. Ball four.

Homer Bailey up. One on, one out. Nice bunt, sac, two outs.

Kc61
09-23-2012, 08:43 PM
ESPN guys glean that Kershaw is healthy based on his fielding play on the bunt. I would think his pitching and how he feels will be more telling.

Heisey flies to left and the inning is over.

Reds with four men LOB, three left in scoring position, after two innings.

Kc61
09-23-2012, 08:48 PM
Dodgers up in the third. Homer Bailey about to make pitch number 34 of the night.

It's a strike to Kershaw. if you're not watching, you are missing some chatter about the 2-3 home/road playoff system in the first round this year.

Apparently Speier said he would rather finish third and have two home games to start things off in the playoffs. Surprised he would publicly say that.

Kershaw fans.

Kc61
09-23-2012, 08:50 PM
Mark Ellis up. Continued discussion by ESPN about the home/road playoff thing.

Full count on Ellis. Strike. Three. Called.

Homer doing well at home in September, according to ESPN guys, who are correct I believe.

Ethier up. Kudos to Homer by ESPN, and kudos to Hanigan.

Ethier grounds to Votto who flips to Homer for the third out.

Kc61
09-23-2012, 08:53 PM
Bottom three coming up. Maybe somebody else can do PBP after the third.

Reds will lead off with Valdez and Votto. Two rather different hitters, I would say.

Kc61
09-23-2012, 08:56 PM
Wilson Valdez will lead off the bottom of the third. Kershaw gets ahead on a foul. 3-1 count now. Walked him. My.

Kc61
09-23-2012, 08:57 PM
So Kershaw pitches around Valdez to face Votto.

Joey up now. Kershaw at 36 pitches.

Ball one outside. Kershaw with a little control issue here.

ESPN informs that Kyle Lohse is now 16-3.

And liklely headed for FA. The Cards extended Westbrook and likely don't have the money for Lohse in the rotation, considering they have a number of younger guys (Kelly, Miller Rosenthal) ready to compete for a spot.

Lohse with Boras as his agent may get 4-5 years @ $15M.

Guy was such an inconsistent pitcher, really blossomed in Cardsland. Always threw an occasional gem, but not consistent like this.

Votto up 2-0 in the count. Now 3-0.

Joey swings 3-0 and fouls.

Votto walks, two on. Reds now with 6 baserunners so far, third inning, no runs.

Kc61
09-23-2012, 09:00 PM
Ok, two on, no out. Todd Frazier up. Swings and fouls. Maybe a little patience, Todd, two straight walks.

Check swing foul on a big curve ball, 1-2 to Todd F.

Todd singles to tie the game. Liner right up the middle of the field. Low pitch, curve ball.

I do think it's debatable whether it's incorrect to hit Cairo ahead of Phipps.

Now if Leake were in the lineup, there would be no debate that he should hit ahead of both of them.

Really, should have bunted Cairo there. Just keep the inning alive and move the runners. Reds leaving a slew of runners on tonight.

NO reason what so ever why DiDi is not starting for Valdez. We know what Valdez brings to the table.

What if Valdez breaks his hand, or Corzart hurts his side again? DiDi might have to be on the post season roster. Let him play..get him so at-bats. We have clinched.

Bad pitch, but the Reds need to score. Now Ramirez hits a single to left.

Homer needs relief. Still no outs.

When he starts to miss, he misses up. That's why he should start in Pac Bell.

To Homer's credit...Nolan Ryan can't win a game when your team just scores 1 run.

Homer at 97 pitches, remains. AJ Ellis bunts foul. Dodgers seem very bunt/squeeze happy here. Gordon very fast at third.

1-1 count on Ellis.

2-1, another fake bunt.

Cairo has had a number of plays this year that have left me scratching my head.

P.S. Votto charged the bunt, so Cairo was covering first.

It's a classic managerial error.

Pitcher, Homer Bailey, leads off next inning. Manager reluctant to remove him. Figures, I'll just pinch hit next half inning.

So the pitcher gets left in too long. Happens all the time. Almost never works.

I agree. Would you want the #1 seed? The #1 seed is going to have to face the hottest NL team. The wild card team will have won most of the games these next two weeks and they would have won the one game playoff...and you play them at their ballpark.

I agree with a qualifier: I'd rather play the Brewers or Dodgers than San Fran but I would rather play San Fran than Atlanta. While the Giants have a great rotation, the Braves' rotation is pitching extremely well and they have both a better bullpen and (at least the past month or two) a better offense.

Atlanta is a really, really good team that is playing as well as anyone lately. The Brewers could still sneak in, but the Braves are the team that probably scares me most. Ironically it's also the team I'm rooting for most outside of Cincinnati as a surrogate Atlantanite.
