Reds made Farmer the only catcher on their roster for awhile (I think 2 weeks or so?) He got a concussion was forced to stay in the game since the Reds had no other catchers and then got hit on the head again. Reds also cut Farmer loose and then forced him to sign a split contract early in his career. I think it's reasonable to assume that the Reds are probably Farmer's last choice, unless they dramatically overpay him. Also, I question whether Farmer would ever want to catch again after that concussion. IIRC, he has not caught since.. but obviously, maybe he has and I am not aware of it.. But at bare minimum, his catching playing time went dramatically down.

Now, I know this is a postseason discussion about moves that would be nice to make, I agree, Farmer or someone like him would be a good fit.. I'm just saying, even if the Reds were willing to pay market value, not sure Farmer wants to come back.. Much like Sonny.. it's kind of unlikely he wants to come back after he was traded while on a "hometown discount" contract.

I'd want Farmer in place of India as the 5th IF who could back-up all the IF spots and he could also DH instead of Fraley or Benson against LHP. I doubt he'd get a better role than that anywhere else. He had 336 PAs for the Twins last year and he turns 34 in 2024. He's not getting more than $4 Million anywhere and probably with less PT than the Role the Reds would have for him would call for. If somebody wants to pay him $5 Million+, then the Reds should pass.

I saw Bowden do one of his lists where he says what teams would be a good fit for the top 40 FAs. Nothing overly exciting for us, he put us as options for Eduardo Rodriguez, Wade Miley, and Harrison Bader.

I haven't seen that yet, my hobby is to troll Ole' leatherpants on his inane posts. Last year he said Cody Bellinger was a terrible pick up for the Cubs as a FA - I think he's got a second job advising Putin on how to win wars.

Well, Rodriguez or Miley would help quite a bit. Not excited by Bader, but if they non-tender Senzel, they will need an OF to play against LHP. Bader wouldn't be the worst idea. If Bowden thinks they need him as an everyday CF, then its nuts.

I feel very comfortable in stating that there is a 0% chance that the Reds will sign Eduardo Rodriguez. If they’re going to acquire actual above-average MLB players, it will be via trade. I would be absolutely shocked if the Reds doled out any more than about $30MM on any one contract.

They’re certainly going to find what they believe is the contention sweet spot. They’re not going to spend a penny over what they believe is necessary not to be awful. Whether they’ll locate that sweet spot or they’ll just be awful is the question.

But free agents? Absolutely not.

I agree about Bader. I could see him hitting for Benson or Fraley against lefties, but definitely not an every day player on this team.
