The idea of getting Farmer and Senzel as RH utility bench guys is an interesting one. Probably could get Farmer for 5 million, Senzel 2-3 million. As pointed out the cost of Wil Myers this year

To be fair, he was a free agent and the Reds could have signed him easily enough.

Not a trade or FA rumor, but the Reds have to declare on Joey Votto’s option by Monday the 6th.
So we’ll know very shortly if they are exercising at $20 million, declining at $7 million, or have reached some middle ground understanding.
Curt Casali is the other player with an option for 2024, a mutual option, pretty clear to Reds will decline in light of the Maile signing.

It’s been reported that they will not pick up Votto’s option, but will try to work out a one year deal at a lower number. I have no reason to doubt those reports.
The question really is if Votto is willing to accept the diminished role that the Reds likely will set out for him. My guess is that he currently is looking around the league to see if anyone he wants to play for, will give him a starting job. The answer to that will likely determine what he does.
Re: Reds Trade And Free Agent Rumours 2023-24 Offseason
My guess is the Reds decline Votto and he hits the market. He still may end-up in Cincy, but I'll bet he looks around first.

Precisely my rationale for signing Ohtani.

Oh I wasn't criticizing your post or trying to say you were wrong.. Just talking out loud.
I agree, you said highly unlikely.
It is a good idea, if the Reds could make it work.

Well, Reds could have brought him back in 2022 instead of releasing him (or not picking up the option or whatever the transaction was) and then signed him for 2023.
It's not as if what he said was that farfetched.

Nothing is easy.
Yet we have people saying the Reds will have no problem getting Votto to agree to sign for 2-5 million/year and agree to be a part timer..
I don't understand why people have to jump on a guy that is basically saying "sure would have been nice to have Miley in 2023"
And then the comparison of signing Miley to Otahni
Re: Reds Trade And Free Agent Rumours 2023-24 Offseason
If you play Immaculate Grid you likely know there's a longlist of players who spent years with a single team, then played a year In Florida or kc.

Sheesh. Didn't think I needed a  for that.
Re: Reds Trade And Free Agent Rumours 2023-24 Offseason
With Votto and Casali's options declined, the Reds currently have $3 million on the books for 2024. With Sportrac's estimated arb and pre-arb players, the projected payroll is at $33,375,000.
If the Reds declined Votto's option and do not sign a premium free agent, I might root for the Blue Jays (or wherever JV signs) next year. I'd think Bellinger/Ohtani/Hader level of player might move the needle, but this is a fairly thin free agent class. A $50-ish million-dollar payroll next season would be heretical to the baseball gods.
