If the Reds declined Votto's option and do not sign a premium free agent, I might root for the Blue Jays (or wherever JV signs) next year. I'd think Bellinger/Ohtani/Hader level of player might move the needle, but this is a fairly thin free agent class. A $50-ish million-dollar payroll next season would be heretical to the baseball gods.
Anything under a 75 million payroll next year would be a disgrace after the way the fans turned out this year. I think they could maybe front load a longer term FA deal, but I have my doubts they'll go past 3 years for anyone. I could see them taking on an expiring contract in a move that limits the amount of prospects they'd have to deal.

Bellinger I would be very, very careful of any long term deal. He was all shades of awful the two seasons before last.

Completely agree, but I also don't see a many other options in this class that are first division starters, either. This is such a weird offseason to have disposable income if you assume they aren't in on Ohtani. Gurriel?

Nick Krall: “We need to figure out how to improve our club and make our club better whether it’s bringing in pitching, position players, more versatility, outfield help, whatever that would be. We just need to look at how to make our club better going into the free agent market.”

I laughed way too hard at this. No kidding, Nick.
If the Reds don't spend significantly in FA, they've confirmed what everybody has said about this ownership group forever and they should be forced to sell the team.

I will believe it when I see it.. Especially after attendance was way more than they expected. And with saving money from Votto, Moose , Casali and Myers money off the table.. they have PLENTY of money.. its how tgey choose to use it without giving excuses..
Re: Reds Trade And Free Agent Rumours 2023-24 Offseason
They spent like 10 million last off season so I hope there would be room for more spending.

Get ready for the creative accounting, "that money allowed us to do lots of stuff, none of which we can talk about"

That is where Krall’s comments are up for debate.
Did he mean, “The Reds can spend more in free agency this season than they did last year” or “the Reds can have a higher payroll than last year?” His wording can be interpreted both ways.

Don’t hold your breath on $75 million. Everything they’ve said and done points to a low payroll. They’ll try to improve with trades and modestly priced FA’s. Any major pickups will be in the nature of high potential younger guys or “solid” veterans. That’s what I expect, anyway.

You have to know they’re going to be modest spenders. The mission is to try to contend on the lowest payroll possible. It will fail, but that’s what they’re trying.

The Reds need Pitchers. The position side is OK if they can get a lefty killer or two to platoon with Fraley and Benson. I would spend on bats as long as it doesn't prevent them from spending on arms.
Re: Reds Trade And Free Agent Rumours 2023-24 Offseason
Based on their actions and the words that match those actions, the Reds owners believe that a certain number of people will always be customers because there’s no other competition nearby. And, this year, they established a model where they can boost attendance with little cost. So, I don’t have faith that they’ll ever fully go for it. Best we can get is accidentally making the playoffs if everything goes perfect that year. There will never be excellent depth and meaningful re-enforcements like we see with other teams.
