Re: The Jay Bruce Watch and Discussion
I still don't get the fetish for trading Bruce. He's controllable at a reasonable salary for his age through 2 more seasons after this. He's one that I'd let go to FA and then make a QA. But then again I'm in the minority in thinking that the Reds can be competitive in 2016 and Bruce would be a nice part of that.

Dealing and putting on the market are two different things. I think Jocketty is gauging interest in Bruce. If he receives a 2011 Hunter Pence type return, Bruce is likely gone. If he can bundle Bruce and Cueto, for example, and get Puig, Holmes, and Austin Barnes, I think Jocketty makes that deal.

They have him until 2017 - how long is this latest rebuilding going to take?

With the right trades? Zero years.

Bruce's salary is reasonable for a veteran player with good success.
But it may not be reasonable for a rebuilding situation.
If Bob and Walt are truly rebuilding, they may not want to tie up $25+ million for the next two years on Bruce.
They may rather use the money for controllable players, maybe international prospects, leaving some to help get a free agent later on.
As for QOs, those involve offering $!6MM for a season, maybe more as we go forward. Whether that will make sense depends on what kind of player Bruce is when he goes free agent.

Trading for solid 2016 veterans will mean taking on serious money contracts.
Where does that leave the Reds in 2017? Another fire sale situation?
The Reds have to balance their 2016 chances, the current payroll, and the financial and contractual result of taking on 2016-ready talent.
My guess is the Reds will be more focused on the longer term, while keeping some current stars. A major rebuild, but not a total rebuild. But we'll see.

Anyone should be available if the return is good, maybe the Reds don't want to trade Bruce but a deal is being offered that is just too good to pass up.

Disco and Suarez were not expensive veterans. Reds trade Cueto, Leake and Bruce for similar returns, combined with the freed up cash, and they could very easily contend.

The Reds are a sub-.500 team. With Cueto, Leake, Bruce they are sub-.500.
A couple of more Discos and Suarezes probably don't even get the Reds back to the current status. Again, they now have Johnny Cueto, Mike Leake, Jay Bruce, to use your examples.
To contend in 2016, IMO, the Reds will have to add several proven veteran players who do not present the risk of prospects. They will need to improve as a team -- and do so without, as you say, Cueto, Leake, Bruce.
You say they will have the cash, and you're likely correct. If so, they will have to use it for proven talent. Which will cost money, and lead to further payroll pressure. And ultimately more selling. So I think they will choose a cheaper alternative and a longer rebuild with youth.

Cueto and Leake aren't exactly Latos and Simon. Reds should get significantly more for them. We are seeing that in the rumors on reputable sites. If the Reds get who have been rumored, they should be in good shape next year.
And after 2016, the new TV money kicks in. Reds shouldn't have the same revenue problems they currently are having that is the cause of the payroll crunch.

If Bob is willing to spend more, his team will get back sooner, sure.
But I think he'll be cautious for awhile. Even if he has more revenue, I doubt Bob wants to experience a tight payroll again in the near future. I wouldn't.

I hope we don't trade him. He's an enigma without a doubt... but he's our enigma. And of course he's been on fire for a month.
Re: The Jay Bruce Watch and Discussion
Hal Morris in Cinci for the Angels to scout Jay Bruce.
And as if on queue, Bruce hits a HR and increases his trade value.
Not that I want the Reds to trade him, but could he bring back Andrew Heaney?

Sean Newcomb would be my target
