The way I read it the payments will be defered.. We'll know more tonight or tomorrow on the details but I don't think extra money was spent.. Unless they DFA Taveras to make room on the 40 for Chapman.

As I said on the other thread, I dreamed this a couple of weeks ago, but put it down to an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of underdone potato.
So, what would you like me to dream next?
Seriously, I haven't read the thread, where I'm sure some will criticize the move, but this excites me. Finally, something seriously positive happens in the offseason.

Now that's just crazy talk, let's not be hasty

If Harang can rebound and Volquez is ready come the second half of the season, the pitching might be the strong suit for the club especially if Bailey and Cueto progress as they did in the month of September. Add Chapman to the mix and this club might be a sleeper next season.

Shockingly, this seems to be the very first consensus  from RZ in it's history.

After the Bengals loss yesterday, whoever thought that the town of Cincinnati would be switching so quickly to baseball season?

Okay, I looked it up about the extra option year, you just have to use up all 3 options before the player has 5 years of professional experience to get the 4th.

Understood. Being a Steelers fan I don't know what to do at this time of the year with us out of the playoffs. Thanks to the Reds, I'm back baby.

Any time. Might be from the last CBA, why it didn't apply to Wily Mo.

Pretty amazing turn of events for a team that seemed, as recently as yesterday, content to hibernate like a Cicada for the next 17 or so years.
One nice thing about Chapman v. the usual young pitcher is that he's locked in at a fixed cost for the next 6 years -- which means that issues of service time and arbitration eligibility are taken off the table. The Reds can feel free to deploy him in whatever role is necessary without worrying about running some clock or increasing his costs. For example, if they start him in AAA this year, they can have him working out of the bullpen later in the season to get experience without worrying that they're wasting service time.
