Isn't Steer that player?

The Phillies are interested in Sonny Gray, sources say, and will be a top suitor for him if they do not retain free agent Aaron Nola.
Gray and Philly pitching coach Caleb Cotham are former college teammates and worked well together while Cotham was with the Reds.

Steer should get a majority of the playing time in LF with the current roster construction. I would say Benson and Fraley for RF/DH vs RHP.

After watching this team's IF defense last year, I'd prefer not seeing Steer or India playing any MI. Steer could play some 1B and maybe 3B, but I think the reds have better options for 3B. I'd make Steer the everyday LF with the option of playing 1B or DH when guys (or he) need some rest.

I have no issues with Steer's bat.
His glove is leagues below both Fraley's and Benson's. Defensive metrics across the board point this out. Given a full season of playing time, UZR/150 pegs him -7.3 as an OF. Will Benson was at 0.5. Fraley was at 0.9. Outs above average paint Steer as one of the worst defenders in the game at just about any defensive position, while Fraley is above average and Benson is slightly below average. According to their range, Benson and Fraley are both right at two runs above average, while Steer is two runs below. Statcast has Steer as a -4 in just 322 innings. Benson is -2 in more than double the innings, and Fraley is +3.

I agree as you have to be strong up the middle, including catcher and CF. Steer will improve defensively in the outfield if he plays it more often and I don't need stratocast to tell me that. lol

Unless we find an upgrade he’s LF1 IMO.

I was mistaken, I was thinking of Marte. Still doesn’t change the rest of the post. I thought Arroyo had been higher up.

Fraley has improved dramatically as an outfielder, he apparently really worked at it, and it shows. Especially in RF.
Both he and Benson score best in RF under UZR/150, but in time I expect both could be adequate in LF. Right now, Benson’s UZR/150 in LF is pretty poor (smallish sample).
Steer can handle LF. Against RHP, I look for him to DH quite often.

Most likely, the Reds planted the rumor.
Even if transparent, it is a way of inviting offers and also letting fans know that a favorite may be traded.

Steer is better than Benson and Fraley in LF to my eyes. Both of those guys are better off in RF. If they wanted to play Benson in LF with Steer as a DH or 1B sometimes then no big deal. I suspect Fraley will be trade bait at some point in the not too distant future. Fraley and Benson are essentially the same player, but BEnson is younger with more upside and without the IL trips.

The Reds are unlikely to make Steer LF1 as the team is currently structured. The OF is the Reds’ main source of left handed hitting. Only EDLC hits lefty among the Reds’ starting infielders and catchers.
So Steer is more likely to play LF part time, infield part time, with a heavy dose of DH. Against RHP, as the team is currently structured, it’ll be Benson, Friedl, Fraley.
Re: Reds Trade And Free Agent Rumours 2023-24 Offseason
Steer was playing LF for the first time in his life, no? Cut the guy some slack. He's going to be better.

Proposed trade from a Mariner fan site
Mariners acquire TJ Friedl for Bryce Miller/Bryan Woo and Cade Marlowe
