2023 put a dent in that theory.

So the 15 straight years of finishing over .500 that preceded 2023? What was that? The Reds have never in their history come close to a feat like that. Not even during the Red Machine years.
And the Cardinals will not repeat 2023; they will countercyclically spend their way to contention until their farm bears a new crop. It’s Business 101. Teams either come to win or they don’t.

The Cards spent 180M$ in 2023 trying to compete. The Reds went with Luke Weaver, played way over their heads for 6 weeks, and finished 2 games over .500.
The dent is small.

That makes the dent bigger. The Cardinals outspent the Reds 2.5 to 1, and finished 11 games behind them.
Which one is the better run organization? Which one gets more out its players?
-
Re: Reds Trade And Free Agent Rumours 2023-24 Offseason
The idea that the Reds can’t simply crib the Cardinals’ methods and become consistent winners is circular argument nonsense. “They’re pooooor! They CAN’T spend!” “Why are they poor?” “BECAUSE THEY’RE POOR, BRO!!!”
Never mind that spending wisely primes the pump. Which leads to more revenue. Voila!!!

The Saint Louis Cardinals.

Sweet, we are going with the one year sample to prove a point now?!
The Cards tried and underperformed 1 year, the Reds fell into performance for a month plus and all is forgiven.

Last year, the Reds were the better run organization. That puts a dent in the theory that the Cardinals are the better run organization. It doesn’t prove anything, but it makes it harder for FCB to argue his point.

I hope the Reds do something soon because I know I can't be the only one that is tired of seeing the same 6 posters beat a subject to death, bury it, dig it back up, beat it some more, throw it off a cliff, run over it, light it on fire, piss on it, etc...

Some of you guys need to get out of the house.
At least get some food delivered, and eat it at the table away from the PC for a few hours.

The Yankees have like what 28 rings. Even they don’t win it every year. Your argument is self-soothing nonsense.

I literally could say the same thing about the same 6 posters who beat to death the subject that the Reds suck and will always suck. I could say the same thing about any message board on any subject.

The Cards just spent $47 million for three starters for 2024. Gray is a TOR. Gibson is an innings eater who threw 192 last year with a FIP in the low 4s. Lynn had his struggles with the Chisox but he’s been a solid veteran for many years.
When the Reds make that kind of commitment to the 2024 rotation please let me know.

But in all seriousness, this is the domain that the Reds have created for fans. I usually spend August and September far the hell away from baseball, but I got suckered by a .500 team. I’ll exit earlier this upcoming season I’m sure.

They’ve already spent in two weeks more than the Reds’ total payroll.

The Reds don’t need to make that kind of commitment because they have done a better job of developing talent. It’s also November 28th.
And right now, many Cardinal fans want to fire their GM because of these very moves that you mentioned. They aren’t wrong. The moves aren’t nearly enough considering the hole the Cardinals dug themselves.

I had no intentions of calling anyone in particular out, but I swear your post count has gone up by a thousand in the last week. Most of the other 10,000 posts this week are in response to your posts. {I'm obviously making these post counts up FWIW} A week, in which the Reds have done nothing.
I'm not attacking, I'm just suggesting step back for a second - catch your breath.

One year does NOT make a trend. That dent is like a rock skipping down the road and hitting the car just before it gets totaled in a major accident.

I didn’t say a trend. I said a dent. And dent is always small and rather insignificant. I chose my words carefully and stand by them.

Is it a dent or is it an aberration? If you chose your words carefully, “aberration” is the better word.

The Reds haven’t won a playoff series in 28 years. They need to make that kind of commitment.

We don’t know yet. It’s only been one year. It could be an aberration. It could be the beginning of a trend. Most likely somewhere in between.

The Reds have been linked twice to adding $25M to this year’s payroll. They are definitely trying to make that kind of commitment. My guess is that they make at least that kind of commitment. The real question is if they are wise with that commitment.

Re: Reds Trade And Free Agent Rumours 2023-24 Offseason
I rescued a dog a few years back that had been abused for the first 8 years of her life. I spoiled her for her last years. Even after years of being treated well, every time anyone tried to pet her, she would flinch, assuming it was going to be painful.
It’s shameful how badly this ownership has treated its fans this past decade. I am guessing it will take at least a few years of good news before Reds fans stop flinching anytime there is any news about the Reds. Hopefully those few years of good news started last year.

Oh to be clear I am not buying the Reds are serious until they actually do something. However, I am going to push back on “Lance Lynn is actually a good signing” - he’s booty cheeks.

I adopted a dog who could accurately detect decades-long patterns. I spent all day arguing with him until he died by his own paw.

I for one, can’t wait to visit mlbtraderumors to read their article entitled, “Reds were in contact with Ohtani,” right after he signs with the Dodgers. Reading that planted garbage by the Reds front office is truly the most exciting part of every offseason. Truly.

Nah, waiting until Sunday and then driving forty miles roundtrip to get The Boston Globe in hope of reading a rumor planted by the Reds in Peter Gammons column is by far the most exciting part of the offseason

“In the end, we couldn’t find the right moves at the right price point so we didn’t add any players or payroll. But we did increase our imaginary almost-payroll by 90 million dollars. And that’s a remarkable thing to do to bring almost winning baseball back to this city.”

These threads are so weird right now. Everyone is angry with each other and outraged. I don’t really understand why. It’s not even December yet.
You’ve got Larry really on a heater. FCB in midseason form. 7658273 going peak devils advocate/argue just to argue form. Can’t wait until the Reds actually do something, even just signing a minor league free agent. This place might literally meltdown.
-
Re: Reds Trade And Free Agent Rumours 2023-24 Offseason
These jabronis thinking and caring about the Reds more than the people being paid to run the team.
-
Re: Reds Trade And Free Agent Rumours 2023-24 Offseason
Reds are gonna sign some 2B/outfielder named Kyle Johnson who you’ve never heard of but is a 31 year old fringe major leaguer who played for 6 years on the Tigers and two relievers named Truck Buckle and Lunk Alemode. And Lodolo is going to get injured in late February. And people are going to say “if we’re in contention by the All Star Break, Reds are going to be major players. And we’ll say I told you so, haters.”

Just to be clear, my “devil’s advocate” position is that I am trusting the numerous reports that say that the Reds intend to spend money this offseason to improve the team. And what’s wild, is that on this board, that is a “devil’s advocate” position.

They already did part of this, their names are Alex Blandino and Revier SanMartin.

Anybody who trusts any reports about anything in 2023 is a sucker waiting to be disappointed. There are two types of reports:
1. Reports where the reporter is making stuff up
2. Reports where the reporter is repeating something from a source that is making stuff up.
Didn't Covid teach you anything?

No, the real question is whether the Reds will defy their own history. Some fans believe that, in the end, the Reds will compromise with second or third tier pickups because they are cheaper to obtain. There is strong precedent for Reds shopping in the shallow end of the pool.
The Reds are not “definitely” doing anything different until they actually commit. So far, they were “in on” one big fish, Sonny Gray, and didn’t get him. Sounds familiar.
Precedent carries more weight with some than linkage, some of which is merely conjecture.
I’m not from Iowa but the Reds need to show me.

It sure sounds like a bunch of you just want the Reds to spend money for the sake of spending money. Hoping they can do something like this again soon. Fingers crossed.
