Re: Jeff Passan: Reds sign Cuban lefty Aroldis Chapman to five-year, $25 million cont
After the egg layed by the Bengals last night, I was very happy to come home and see this.
I just hope it pays off. Watching Crasnick on ESPN earlier, it seems like they think he needs a year or two in the minors before making an impact. Hoping he is wrong. :)

this is so out of the ordinary for a team like ours
I've seen this sentiment mentioned a couple of times now and I'm not so sure I agree with it.
While making a big splash during the offseason isn't the custom, signing the uber-talented, high-priced youngsters out of Latin America is. Going from Duran to Yorman to Valor last year and to Chapman now, I think a clear pattern and plan has emerged: scout the (sugar) out of Latin America while forging positive relations with the buscones/players, and pony up the big money to sign the cream of the crop.
The only thing is, this plan takes considerable time to reap the rewards.

News conference is at noon tomorrow, according to Mark Shelton.

I whole-heartedly agree. This move doesn't really impact the 2010 team, IMO, which means we're likely headed to another season around the .500 mark. I don't see Bob Castellini and the Reds giving Dusty more time after that.

If 2010 is another season around or below the .500 mark I hope Castellini gives up on Dusty Baker.

Dusty's contract is up after this year. Unless the Reds make the playoffs, I can't imagine any way he's back in 2011.
I gotta think Jocketty is going to want to bring in his own guy as manager. Once the Reds are out from under Dusty's contract, he will have freedom to do that.

I am stoked!!!
I don't have time to read the other 16 pages of the thread, but adding Travis Wood to this list might not be a bad idea.

Volquez will miss the 1st half of the season. We might not see him until August. And if we don't see him or Chapman until then that would be fine with me.

My message to the pitching staff if I'm Bryan Price: You guys get us through the summer still in contention and we'll have reinforcements coming.

The Reds would still control Chapman until he accrues enough service time to file for free agency. So if he spends this season in the minors, and is a success for the next four seasons, the Reds would still have the rights to Chapman for two more years and would go through the arbitration process. He would be inline for a raise. That is at least how I understand it. Is that correct?

We control his rights, but not his salary for year 6. Let's say he becomes an Ace and is one of the top pitchers in the game. He might win 20 million.
So 6 years would have been better than 5.

That's why I said "keep him away from Dusty as long as possible" Hopefully Chapman will spend a year or two in the minors until Baker's contract expires, then Walt will make a new mgr hire
