Chapman had never heard of Cincinnati as he was not allowed to watch baseball growing up in Cuba. And oh my god, now I'm crying.

From watching the press conference, it is apparent that MAJOR patience is going to be required. This kid is going to need to learn more than pitching mechanics.
He is going to need to adjust to a whole new culture.

I have to say I already liked MLB Network, but they actually covered this press conference unlike ESPNews which if I'm not mistaken was created to show press conferences LIVE!
Kudos to Bud Selig, yes I said it.
Seems to be a humble young man from all I can tell based on the presser. I look forward to seeing what he can do.
Walt even stated they had no preconceived plan for him as far as the majors or minors and that getting him into the Reds program would dictate that.

I'm confident members of RedsZone could have ask better questions than most of those ask in this press confrence.

Good to hear him working with Price and Soto soon.

I'll second this opinion.

Did the Reds ever sign Kevin Mitchell?
How about Ron Gant?
Ron Gant was an unusual situation in that we signed him as a Free Agent after the Braves cut him following his motorcycle accident. We rehabbed him and he started for us the following season.
According to baseball-reference.com, we only got Mitchell via trade (twice, it appears).

#54? Wonder why he chose that. Someone should have asked, but apparently the Reds aren't allowed to have more than 5 members of the media present.
After hearing Walt, he may be on the 25 man on April 4.

I've seen several internet videos of analysis on this kid. The consensus is that he is not yet ready for prime-time, but that his problem spots are easily fixable.
Walt Jocketty emphasized during the press conference that he intended to get Chapman with Mario Soto to work on that change-up. And he wanted Brian Price to start working with him as soon as possible.

Chapman's agent pointed out that 10 of the 40 players on the Reds roster speaks Spanish, along with Dusty Baker and Bryan Price, and that's one of the biggest reasons he signed with the Reds. He also said Chapman plans on learning to speak English as soon as possible.
Jocketty said Chapman will start working with Bryan Price next week in Arizona.
He also plans to work with Mario Soto on the changeup. Great news.
It sounds to me like there's a decent chance Chapman could open the season in the Reds rotation. I just hope they're patient with him.

Likewise, Walt stated he intended to get Chapman together with Ramon Hernandez ASAP and indicated they would be living close to one another.
I would have liked to have heard Jocketty answer the question about broadcasting the games in Spanish. I think we're nearing where we should consider that. There is a growing Latin population in Reds country and broadcasts can now be streamed via the web. I understand there's some added expense there, but it might be money well spent. I've see the Reds send reps to the annual Hispanic festival in Carthage and it would be another way to add to a base, introducing more folks to the Reds and perhaps snare some folks who aren't as familiar with baseball from other parts of Latin America.

I agree. I think the Reds could trim some of what seems like a 25-man roster of broadcasters to make room for a Spanish broadcasting team.

Yep, in order to get a young SS, they are probably going to have to trade prospects of comparable worth. I have no problem trading a pitching prospect for a solid SS of comparable value.
A smart GM can sort through the pitching prospects, figure out the ones that appear to be overvalued, and then trade them. IMO, this has historically been a Walt strength more often than not.
If we could get a nice young SS for Malony, Wood, and/or other prospects, you have to do it. Don't overpay, but we need to fill that hole.
