OBM, I don't know if that sixth year is an option year or not, but I do know that player options are considered "guaranteed" seasons in terms of contract structure. So even if it's being reported as six guaranteed years, that doesn't necessarily mean that sixth year isn't an option season. However, they usually do reference those option years as a player option, so perhaps it truly is six guaranteed years without any options.

Buckley on Chapman

Chris Buckley, the Reds director of amateur scouting, on Aroldis Chapman:
“The ball comes out his hand very, very easy. In the World Baseball Classic, he hit a 100 a couple of times. But you don’t think he’s throwing that hard because he’s doing it very easily. Every once in a while you’ll see a young guy who’s very special talent, a like a Josh Beckett, but it’s usually a right-hander. To have a left-hander with that enormous talent is very rare.”
Buckley said Cuban players are trickier to scout because their coaches use them differently.
“But in all the viewings we had of him, all the DVDs and video we saw, none of our scouts saw anythnig that would be a problem. He just needs a little coaching. We think he can have three or foiur quality pitches. All our scouts think his slider will be well, well above average. His fastball is already well, well above average. The player development people will work with his changeup. We’ll have him throw it x amount of times. It can be an outstanding pitch too.”
By the way, nine different Reds scouts saw Chapman.

I think Ohio's has jumped a bit as well, but not as much as Kentucky. Hard to know how many there are because of course they're not all counted, but the 2000 census had Kentucky's Hispanic population at 60K. That's ten years ago, and I'm going to say that figure is very, very, very conservative.
That's my perception also. There's been a big increase in population since 2000. I'm not saying there's 50,000 Hispanic people in the area but there are more than you would imagine.
And definatley enough that with a modest investment in marketing could begin to boost attendance numbers.

I know a couple of years ago they had a Hispanic Heritage day.

From 2004 to 2008 I went to about 20 games a year. Last season that number dropped to 4. I just couldn't get excited enough to justify the 4 hours round trip. Even if Chapman spends all of 2010 in the minors this has helped that excitement return. I can't wait for baseball.

Here's a by region, IIRC almost 2 million of the 3.9 in the Midwest can be found in the Chicago land area
Hispanic Population by Region:
2006 Rank
West 18,864,8232
South 15,376,2153
Northeast 6,102,3144
Midwest 3,977,686

I want to say they had one last year too. I seem to remember it....but I have no concept of time so it may have been last night or 1987.

Has anybody provided any sort of historical data regarding this kids performance? H/9, HR/9, K/9, BB/9, IP etc?
I'm sure it's out there. If you could direct me to the rough page number in the thread I can track it down from there. :) I guess I'm not a "true fan" but I can't go re-read the entire thread.

That's actually 1979. I know because that set still haunts me. I had every card except for some backup catcher I never heard of... Jerry Narron.

Very pleased to hear it's 6 years...that's great for the Reds.
Re: Jeff Passan: Reds sign Cuban lefty Aroldis Chapman to six-year deal (Financials T
Here's reports from some who lost out to us:
From a Washington Post blog:
The Nationals were "right in it to the end" in the battle to sign 22-year-old Cuban pitching phenom Aroldis Chapman, offering more than $20-million, according to team President Stan Kasten. However, the southpaw signed with the Reds for $25-million for five years, with an option for a sixth season that could bring the contract to $30-million.
"We had a private workout with him. [General manager] Mike [Rizzo] liked him as much as any young lefthander he's ever seen," said Kasten.
However, when the total value of the last Nationals offer approached $25-million, almost $10-million more than the Nats paid to sign No. 1-overall draft pick Stephen Strasburg, Washington had reached its limit.
"The romance of having Strasburg from the right side and Chapman from the left was very exciting. Our scouts were very high on him and ownership backed us," said one Nats source.
