I think it would be great if they could do this but I guess my question is why would Colorado give up a cheap 26 yr old catcher that hit 31 HRs with a 121 OPS+ last year and playing well again this year.
I guess my second question is what would you give up if you were the Reds because I don't think he would be cheap to acquire.

Thought it was a 1 year deal...
my mistake.
It's still about $27M coming off the books. Yes, there will be raises, and some FA's are going to have to come in more than likely. But I don't see the Reds looking at another Suarez FA in 2027. Not when the DH could be Steer. I can definitely see the Reds looking at an OF that has both HRod and Marte in it, and maybe Steer is the 3rd OF. Arroyo could replace McLain at 2B. Or Hays at 3B. If Marte, HRod and Arroyo are regulars it means the payroll is significantly lower.
Even if there were a quality C available, and there isn't, the Reds are not signing one long term, especially with Duno now OPSing .853. You know they are salivating over him. He's going to be at AA to start 2027. That's a 3 month hot start away from living in Cincinnati.
Now, what could affect the payroll is a Sal Stewart LTC. I think him cooling has cooled the Reds on the idea a little. I wonder if a day off (Tuesday) might help. Just watch the game and slow down a little.
If all we want to do is look at offense, sure. Tevino is not a guy. If we want a mature handling of a rotation, and someone to assist Duno, then, perhaps that's money well spent.
I don't know for sure. I'm probably wrong, but I don't feel his contract is keeping the Reds from a single thing.
Re: MLB 2026 News & Discussion
No single contract is keeping the Reds from signing anyone, but $5 Million for Trevino, $7 Million for Hayes...that's 10% of the payroll to guys who provide basically nothing and they aren't the only ones.
As far as the money coming off the books, Elly and Abbott reach arb. Greene has an $8 Million raise built into his contract. That alone probably eats up $27 Million. Steer gets a raise. Lodolo too. Santillan and Ashcraft get raises. They still need another Catcher, another starting pitcher and need to spend on the OF and to replace Suarez and Lowe. The Reds can't waste any of their money.
Trevino was worth 0.3 WAR in 2025. He's no more or no less than a cheap back-up Catcher and it's not worth $5 Million.

"There will be payflex because of money coming off the books" is in the same Baseball Fairy Tales book as "we have enough starters, let's trade one."

They seem to be getting into the kitchens of plenty of hitters.

Austin Wynns was released by the A's.
His BR page is awesome. One of these things is not like the others...

The Dodgers have lost 4 straight games, all by 4+ runs
It’s the first time they’ve done so since July 1936 (!!!)
It’s tied for the franchise’s longest single-season such streak (joined NL in 1890)

LH 57.5% have an OPS + below 100

Re: MLB 2026 News & Discussion
NL central still all above .500 is pretty wild. There are only 12 teams in MLB over .500. The NLC is currently 30 games over .500 vs the rest of the MLB.
