Terry Melcher was one of the principal organizers and a significant creative force behind the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, at which Balin and JA performed. Melcher, of course, was the guy who refused to sign Charlie to a record deal, sparking Charlie's rage . The Manson killings occurred at Melcher's former residence at 10050 Cielo Drive, prompting many to believe that Melcher might have been Charlie's target. Charlie had been on the property at Cielo Drive multiple times, apparently.
In fact, Sly Stone, spent time at 10050 Cielo Drive while Melcher lived there, even playing piano and singing with Melcher's mother, Doris Day. Sly reportedly said that he saw Manson at the house on more than one occasion. Before JA became famous, Sly produced several tracks for Grace Slick's band, The Great Society, which opened for the very first iteration of Balin's Jefferson Airplane. Also both Sly and JA performed at Woodstock, with Sly immediately preceding JA, who was the final act.
So, lots of weird Charlie and Marty connections.
