Since you are 63, the first song was from 1962. The singer was in a group at the time. Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

8th grade would have been 1974. My Eyes Adored You. Frankie Valli as a solo artist. Interestingly enough. it was first recorded by the FV and 4 Seasons. The recorded company balked at releasing it. Valli purchased the rights for a mere pittance ($4,000). He found another production company to release it, and the rest is history.

Originally inspired by a Curtiss Brothers song about mythical boots, the songwriter transformed the song into a reflection of his own personal journey of healing after a painful divorce. The song captures his emotional sojourn as he recounts his experiences on a transformative, long boat trip across the Pacific, and finding solace and perspective while sailing through French Polynesia. The writer described it as "The power of the Universe to heal your wounds." I can vouch for that statement, which is one reason why the song connects with me so much. I love the line "Spirits are using me, larger voices callin' ."

The metaphorical song title refers to a constellation of stars, crucial for navigation in a certain part of the world, and symbolizing guidance and hope in times of darkness. I named two of my cats ("Mimi" and "Immi" ) after stars (Mimosa and Imai) in this constellation. My cats don't seem to enjoy the song as much as I do.

The song peaked at #18 on the Billboard Hot 100. How it wasn't a #1 song is beyond me. The band never had a chart-topping song on the Billboard charts. That also is pretty unbelievable.

Imagine being a kid at college and falling head over heels for this good-looking girl that you see on campus.(We've all been there) Imagine ,now, that the girl is five years your senior and married . Imagine, further, that she is the wife of your professor AND she is pregnant with his child. As fate would have it, you are at a Halloween party on campus, and guess who shows up? Yep, your fantasy girl!!! You get to talking... and flirting. Even though you are aware she's married to your teacher and she's pregnant, you give her your phone number and ask her to call you. She never does. (Again, we've all been there)

That's exactly what happened to this one dude at Bard College back in the late sixties. The woman later admitted that she was intrigued by the horny college guy at the party and was tempted to call him , but decided against it. About six years later the guy wrote a song about the experience and the song climbed the Billboard charts all the way to #3 . He didn't get the girl but we all got a great song as a result of that meeting at a Halloween party on the campus of Bard College.

37. We talked about singer/songwriter and Cincinnati native, Marty Balin. Now, let's talk about another Cincinnati native, who also took an interest in music and became a singer and songwriter himself. He and Balin were born about seven years apart in Cincinnati. In addition to sharing the same birthplace, the two men would go on to share some very strange, maybe even eerie, connections later in life.

Both would end up settling in the Haight-Asbury district of San Francisco. Balin would help shape the music scene in Haight-Asbury in the mid 60's, when he formed Jefferson Airplane and debuted the band at The Matrix, a club he opened in August of '65. The other "musician" settled into Haight-Asbury in the spring of '67, moving into the neighborhood known for its burgeoning "Summer of Love" counterculture. He, and a young girl by the name Mary Brunner, moved into a residence at 636 Cole Street, and lived there from April til November of '67. This residence was less than two miles from where Balin took up residence on 16th and Clement back in '65 when he formed Jefferson Airplane.

The struggling, wannabe musician befriended Beach Boys founder and drummer, Dennis Wilson, even spending considerable time at Wilson's house. Wilson actually took one of his songs, changed the title and altered the lyrics to fit the Beach Boys style, then released it as a B-side to the '68 Beach Boys song "Bluebirds Over the Mountain." The original songwriter, who wanted so much to be a big shot in the music business, was never officially credited for the song. He also approached a record producer(Doris Day's son) about getting a recording contract. The producer finally agreed to audition the singer but, after the audition, refused to sign him, saying his music was just "average." The rest, as they say, is for the history books.

Maybe the most eerie connection between Balin and his fellow Cincinnati native is the rather shocking similarity in their physical appearance. They really did look a lot alike at the time they were hanging out around the San Francisco music scene in the late 60's. I wonder if the lesser musician ever tried to pick up chicks with the line "How you doin' ? I'm Marty Balin." Probably not. He had his own way with young girls.

Melcher, of course, was the guy who refused to sign Charlie to a record deal, sparking Charlie's rage . The Manson killings occurred at Melcher's former residence at 10050 Cielo Drive, prompting many to believe that Melcher might have been Charlie's target. Charlie had been on the property at Cielo Drive multiple times, apparently.

To Charles Manson, the number "9" was a reference to the Beatles' song "Revolution 9" from their White Album, which he interpreted as a prophecy for an apocalyptic race war he called "Helter Skelter".

That is, on April 14, 1964, the Beatles held the top 5 spots on the Billboard Hot 100, a feat that had never been accomplished before, and hasn't been accomplished since. Not only did they hold down the top five spots on the chart, the lads from Liverpool had seven other songs appearing on the Hot 100. Furthermore, a week later, on April 21, two additional Beatles' songs entered the Billboard chart, giving them a staggering total 14 songs out of the Hot 100. Now that's utter domination!!!

Obviously, no other artist, or band, has come close to duplicating he feat accomplished by the Beatles in April of '64. But who could make the case for having come the closest? That, RZ music trivia savants, is what you are gonna tell me.

More about Rikki Ducornet("Rikki Don't Lose That Number"). She is a renowned, award-winning(many awards) writer, poet and artist. She is 82 years old today. She did just fine without that ass, Donald ***en.

She has written more than twenty books . Her novels are published in over a dozen languages and her paintings exhibited internationally. She made a good decision in losing that number.

39.One of my biggest crushes as a teenager... She was ten years older than me but I didn't care. I would have traveled all the way to California and married her in a heartbeat, provided she would have agreed to dump that loser, Andrew Gold, who she was engaged to. She eventually dumped Andrew and later married drummer, Russ Kunkel. She was once a roommate with Linda Ronstadt at, with whom she shared clothes and makeup when they lived together. The song peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 early in 1979 , and reached #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. It was her biggest hit. Sadly, she died at the young age of 45.

Did anyone in the history of the world ever look less like a rock singer than Christopher Cross? He looked like that overweight kid that bagged groceries at the Piggly Wiggly when I was in high school.

Nicolette Larson sang with Neil Young on Young's album Comes a Time. Loved that record.

She was an ideal backup singer for Neil, imo. It worked perfectly.

I read somewhere once that everyone loved working with Nicolette Larson. One, because she was extraordinarily talented and two, she was one of the nicest people in the business and easy to get along with.

I did not know that about her. Good info!

Sidebar: back in the day, Roy fell head over heels in love with a woman when this album came out. It became “our” album and in particular our song. I mean, I wanted to marry her, have babies with her, and spend the rest of my life with her. We humped like bunnies day and night and everywhere and every place. Angels sang and doves flew. One little problem was… she was married. Haha hoho.

Little did I know that divorcing women weren’t the most stable entity is the world. 6 months later she was divorced and running off to California with some Air Force captain and Roy was left wrecked on the rocks of despair.

I love Roy's stories almost as much as I love Warren Zevon lyrics. Most stories involve humping like bunnies or imbibing like Keith Richards. And both you and Keith are still here to share your stories with us, and we are all the better for it.
